Liversedge 1 (1)(P.Gaughan 24)
Att 130
Referee: S.Barber
Bridlington Town got their pre-season campaign off to a winning start
but
had to come from behind against a spirited Liversedge side. The visitors
had
the better of the early possession forcing a number of corners but for
no
reward. Bridlington saw good efforts from Kevin Smith before Gaughan
opened
the scoring on 24 mins. He cut in from the left of the box and curled
the
ball past Nicky Baxter in the home goal. The home side upped the pace
and
produced another chance for Smith but Townsend cleared off the line,
and
Phil Harrison saw a goal bound effort tipped round for a corner. New
signing
Steve Fisher levelled for Bridlington in first half stoppage time. A
foul on
Craig Burdick gave Town a free kick. MArtin Thacker lifted the ball
in and
Fisher headed home.
A half time downpour made the surface slippery but Bridlington got to
grips
the better and took the lead just before the hour mark. Dave Ingram
got
through and lobbed the Liversedge keeper but the ball came back off
the
post. It was oonly half cleared and Stuart Baldwin, who had just come
as a
substitute, crossed to the back post where Craig Burdick knocked home
what
proved to be the winner.

Referee: M.Elliot - Hull
Att: 103
Queensgate saw two GLSFootball.com sponsored sides produce an evenly
matched contest. Visitors Grantham showed first with Huckerby firing
over a volley on 3 minutes, before the home side began to get into their
stride. Grantham keeper Ziccadi had to save twice in quick succession
from Bridlington skipper Harper, and shortly after HArrison crossed
for new signing Collinson who fired just over the bar. Huckerby was
again given a chance to shoot for Grantham but he skied his volley well
over on 33 mins.
Bridlington began sprightly in the second half with Smith and Fell combining
well together and the Grantham keeper again called into action to tip
round Smith's well struck shot. Granthams best effort of the half came
from Francis who hit a 25 yarder just wide of the Bridlington post,
but Bridlington finished the stornger forcing two corners in the last
minute but they couldn't capitalise.

Bridlington town 0 - 0 Pickering Town
Referee: M.McGrath
Att: 164
As Bridlington continue their preseason campaign they entertained North
Yorkshire side Pickering Town. Throughout the game Bridlington had opportunities
from numerous set pieces, as the referees whistle disrupted the flow
of the game. Pickering had keeper Kev Martin to thank for two fingertip
saves, first from a Thacker free kick and then a Fell snapshot in the
first half.
Smith had two good chances in the second half after playing a one-two
with Burdick he saw his shot saved before a neat move saw Burdick and
Palmer link to find Smith in space but he pulled his side foot shot
wide of the mark on the hour. Pickering's only real threat came with
8 minutes remaining as Bridlington had pushed up. A ball over the top
beat the offside trap but the Pickering striker could only find Bridlington
defender Robson on the goal line who cleared confidently. Bridlington
finished the game still attacking but couldn't find a way through.

A hastily arranged friendly took the place of the normal training session
to allow Billy HEath to try out different options. Bridlington created
numerous chances but found the net only once late on, but Paul Palmer
was ruled offside. There were pleasing performances from Nick Baxter
in goal and a special mention for the outstanding Steve Underwood in
midfield.

Bridlington Town 0 - 0 Gainsborough Trinity
Att: 125
Referee: J.Smith
GLS Sponsored Unibond Premier side Bridlington Town dominated this
game against their Conference North visitors to remain unbeaten in the
pre-season campaign. Town kept the pressure up all game and restricted
Gainsborough to rare excursions forward. Gareth Collinson was involved
in many of Bridlington's first half efforts, having several shots himself
and also being provider for for Paul Palmer and Steve Underwood attempts.
Steve Heath was unlucky to see a shot from inside the area go just wide
and Nicky Baxter in the Bridlington goal was a virtual spectator. The
Bridlington defence dealt comfortably with anything Gainsborough produced
and for much of the second half Bridlington kept the ball in the visitors
half of the pitch. A combination of luck and resolute defending from
Gainsborough kept Bridlington out as Palmer was given the chance to
shoot and successive shots were blocked before Harrison fired just over.
Gainsborough saw a header from Hurst graze the top of the bar and another
through ball saw Gavin Kelly kick clear.
This was a very positive performance from Town with another clean sheet
and they now just need a little more rub of the green to turn the numerous
chances created into goals.

Bridlington Town 3 (2)(Robson 16, Harrison 32, Suddaby 47)
Gresley Rovers 0 (0)()
Att: 118
Referee: W.Grunill - Hull
Bridlington Town put on a superb display to see off their visitors.
Two
first half goals from Paul Robson and a peach from Phil Harrison was
added
to early in the second half by Craig Suddaby.
After early pressure from Town, Rovers had a break and Edijifor beat
the
offside trap but Suddaby covered well to clear for a corner. At the
other
end Darren Fell created chances for Martin Thacker to shoot and then
an
Andy Taylor cross was just too deep for Phil Harrison to benefit. On
nine
minutes another Taylor cross was met with a sweet volley on the turn
by
Kevin Smith butGresley keeper Belford was well placed to save. An intricate
move involving Robson, Fell and Harrison saw Harrison fire just wide
on the
quarter hour. Town were soon on the attack again and Paul Robson got
down
the left and his deep cross dropped inside the back post with Criag
Burdick
on hand to make sure, to open the scoring for the home side. An injury
to
Craig Burdick saw him replaced just before the half hour. A cross field
move from Town saw Darren Fell feed the unmarked Phil Harrison. He made
himself space and curled a delightful shot from the edge of the box
into
the top corner for the second goal. Bridlington searched for a third
Taylor
crossed, Harrison nodded down and Smith fired over. A free kick 25 yards
out gave Thacker a shooting chance and he curled the shot just wide
of the
post on 40 mins. Gresley tried to make inroads with Edijifor looking
dangerous but the home defence marshalled well. Another chance for Gresley
from a free kick was cleared. One or two "choice" tackles
gave cause for
concern as the half came to a close.
A pacey start to the second half from the home side earned a corner.
Craig
Suddaby was in the right place to head home off the underside of the
bar on
47 minutes. From the restart Town regained possession and set Harrison
into
space and his shot was deflected just wide. After the early storm, Gresley
pushed forwards and Gummer had a chance but fired wide. Martin Thacker
then
played Darren Fell through and his powerful shot was tipped round by
Belford. Suddaby was just wide with the header from the corner. Another
chance for the home side for Phil Harrison was again tipped round by
Belford. After Town had a penalty appeal turned down, Gresley broke
forward
with O'Connor having a chance but the home side cleared. Then Gummer
got
down the left to cross and O'Connor headed against the bar. Edijifor
looked
to follow up but was offside. Spurred on by this, Gresley attacked again
to
win a corner but Simpson headed wide. Bridlington got back into their
stride and Taylor got down the right to cross for Smith. His shot was
deflected for a corner. More pressure and another corner on the right
but
Gresley cleared. The introduction of substitutes by the home side allowed
Gresley to come into the game more as the new players adjusted to the
game.
The remainder of the game proved entertaining and with two minutes left
a
cross from Taylor found Wallace who headed just wide.

Att: 235
Referee: PT Kettlewell
Bridlington Town announced their arrival in emphatic style at Burscough
with their biggest away win in two years. A three goal blitz in seven
second half minutes, a penalty save and a fourth to round off things
sent
the supporters home happy.
Town took a while to find their feet at this new level and over half
an
hour had gone before they began to string things together. Darren Fell
had
a shot blocked and and the defender just nicked it away fromPaul Palmer
as
he closed in. Town continued in the ascendancy with Lee Harper going
close
with a header and Paul Robson looking dangerous. Burscough came close
late
in the half when a Burscough break saw Gedman glance a header just wide.
BUrscough had the first effort of the second half when Martindale fired
wide but it was the visitors who took the lead. MArtin Thacker crossed
from
the right and Lee Harper headed home on 54 mins. Town increased their
lead
two minutes later when Darren Fell slotted Paul Palmer through. He outpaced
defender Karl Bell and toe poked the ball past the advancing keeper
Newnes.
Another five minutes gone and the visiors were further ahead. Thacker
lifted the ball over the defence and Craig Burdick chased down only
to be
bundled off the ball by the keeper Newnes and a penalty was awarded.
Martin
Thacker slotted home. Burscough brought on all three of their subs and
had
a little more of the possession and a cross into the box was hanled
by
Heath and Burscough were awarded a penalty. Town keeper Nick Baxter
was
inspired and saved Steve McNulty's penalty. The visitors rounded things
off
with a fourth when Steve Underwood sp[lit the defence to feed craig

Bridlington Town (1)(Palmer 13)
Frickley Athletic (1)(Tracey 9,)
Att: 285
Referee: J.Smith - Hull
Bridlington Town will be disappointed that they didn't take all three
points from this game after creating enough second half chances to have
won, but an early goal from the visitors and a swift equaliser from
Town
saw the points shared.
Two minutes in and Collinson and Burdick created a chance for Palmer
but
the Frickley defence covered well. Town had provided most of the attacking
but a loose ball was picked up in midfield by Frickley and came to Richard
Tracey whose mis hit shot curled over Baxter and just dropped under
the bar
to open the scoring on 9 mins. Town pushed up again and won a free kick.
Thacker curled the ball in and Paul Palmer powered home a header to
level
matters on 13 mins. Frickley went on the attack and Baxter had to come
out
quickly and conceded a corner. Two more followed but the home defence
held.
The game continued apace with both teams attacking alternately. Midway
through the half Paul Palmer and Craig Burdick both had shots but straight
at Shackleton in the visitors goal. A ball over the top was only partially
cleared by the Frickley defence and Palmer's return effort went just
wide
of the post. A touchline scramble saw Frickley come away with the ball
but
the home defence cleared. Frickley attacked again and gained a free
kick
for a foul centrally 35 yards out. Bennett skied the ball well over
on the
half hour. Frickley burst out of defence and a cross from the left found
Tracey but he fired wide. For Bridlington, Burdick played a through
ball
for Palmer and Shackleton scuffed his kick. As Palmer looked to regather
he
was harshley judged to have fouled the Frickley defender. Five minutes
from
half time Gareth Collinson tricked his way into space at the edge of
the
Frickley box to shoot but Shackleton made a full length save to deny
him.
HT 1 - 1
On 53 mins Paul Palmer did some magic in the corner and crossed, Darren
Fell got in a header and Shackleton just managed to get a touch round
the
post for a corner. That resulted in a scramble that was finally cleared.
Burdick made a good run down the right but was halted with a foul
challenge. Frickley cleared and Lee Pugh slotted Tracey through but
he
fired wide on 56 mins. Back at the other end and another foul gave
Bridlington a free kick but Frickley once more held firm. A push on
Fell
gave the home side another free kick on the right and this time Martin
Thacker grazed the bar with his effort on 62 mins. On 64 mins a corner
to
Bridlington found Harper's head but Shackleton punched clear. As Town
continued to search for the lead, Burdick crossed and Palmers header
went
just the wrong side of the post into the side netting. Shackleton came
to
the rescue for Frickley once more when a Burdick back heel put palmer
in
and the Frickley keeper turned the ball for a corner. With less than
20
mins remaining Robinson crossed and Town substitute Wilson glanced a
header
just wide.Frickley broke to win a corner with fifteen minutes remaining
but
they couldn't benefit. Then Mark Vickerage found space to shoot from
distance and grazed the home bar. Bridlington attacked and the ball
landed
at the feet of Fell but as he stretched to shoot he slipped and his
shot
hit the post. Next a Suddaby cross was headed just wide by Underwood.
Another Bridlingtn attack saw Palmer burst into the box and his powerful
shot hit the side netting.

Radcliffe Borough 1(1)(Kelly 17)
Bridlington Town 1(0)(Collinson 81)
Att: 225
Referee: AD Hutchinson
Bridlington Town maintained their unbeaten start to the season but
had to
work very hard to get a valuable away point at one of the title favourites.
Radcliffe took a first half lead with a Simon Kelly nearpost header
from a
corner. Nick Baxter in the Bridlington goal made several outstanding
saves
to keep Bridlington in it, before Gareth Collinson headed home late
on to
grab a point for the Seasiders.
Radcliffe's early threat came down the right with Lee Duffy frequently
providing dangerous balls into the box and Baxter had to react quickly
to
tip a Phil Denney effort over the bar. From the corner Simon Kelly got
in
at the near post to glance the ball home to give Radcliffe the lead.
More
Radcliffe pressure gave Steve Foster a couple of chances but once more
Baxter came to the visitors rescue with another outstanding save. A
brief
foray upfield for Town Saw a corner gained and after a half clearance
Steve
Underwood volleyed just wide but Radcliffe had a further chance when
Karl
Marginson again brought the best out of Baxter.
Town came more into the game in the second half, playing down the slope,
with a Craig Suddaby cross allowing Darren Fell a shot but keeper Hurst
saved. Suddaby again was provider with a cross that drew a free kick
for
the visitors and Thacker fired straight at Hurst. Maintaining the pressure,
Craig Burdick fed Paul Palmer who glanced a header just wide. Radcliffe
then gained control with Foster getting through to go one on one with
Baxter but Baxter was again inspired to save. From the corner Denney
headed
over. Bridlington then came back into it, Thacker shooting from distance,
Burdick seeing a snapshot go just over and Palmer having a shot saved.
Town
brought on Gareth Collinson and soon made an impact when a shot on the
turn
went just wide. After a Radcliffe attack, Baxter gathered and sent a
long
ball forward for Palmer. He beat his marker and fired a powerful shot
in
that Hurst could only parry. Collinson was on hand to head home for
his
first goal for the club and Bridlington's equaliser. Town had chances
to
win it in stoppage with both Thacker and Collinson seeing shots saved
but a
draw was probably a fair result.

Whitby Town 0(0)()
Att: 414
Referee:R.J.West - Beverley
A record attendance in the League for Bridlington since reforming in
1994
saw 414 attending this East Coast derby.
A keenly contested opening couldn't separate the sides as they assessed
each others strengths. Bridlington switched play from the left and
Collinson fed Wilson, whose shot was deflected for a corner. Whitby
returned play and won a free kick on the right corner of the home box.
The
defensive wall blocked the shot. Whitby attacked again but the home
defence
dealt with the threat. Bridlington pressured up field and a half chance
for
Darren Fell just wouldn't drop for him to shoot, then Wilson intercepted
to
feed Burdick who shot just wide on 20 mins. On the half hour a foul
on
Collinson gave Bridlington a free kick 30 yards out but like Whitby
earlier
the shot hit the wall. For Whitby, Ormerod got down the right to win
a
corner. Baxter gathered the ball to set Bridlington forwards again.
Following a left hand Thacker free kick, Wilson saw his shot blocked
but he
recovered to cross for Burdick who headed over. Another free kick, this
time on the right was headed behind by Robinson for a corner. Whitby
came
away with the ball and broke quickly but Graham Robinson could only
shoot
wide. Bridlington attacked down the left through Darren Fell and was
scythed down by Williams, who received a booking. Bridlington finished
the
half the stronger though Whitby still looked dangerous on the break.
In the first minute of the second half Darren Fell played Paul Wilson
through. He turned his defender and shot for goal but Whitby keeper
Escritt
saved. Whitby attacked and Bishop crossed but Ormerod couldn't get enough
on the ball and it went behind. Whitby had a spell of pressure resulting
in
a corner. Baxter punched clear. A nifty ball over the top sent Liam
Gildea
through but he fired across the face of the goal. The home side attacked
down the left with Collinson, Fell and Wilson working well but the final
ball was too strong and Escritt collected. An injury to Craig Burdick
saw
hime replaced just after the hour by Phil Harrison. On 75 mins a deep
ball
in saw Baxter have to punch.Alex Gildea fired the ball back in and Craig
Suddaby had to clear off the line. Soon after a late challenge saw an
altercation between players and Bridlington's Martin Thacker was dismissed
for a second yellow card. Bridlington's ten men had to battle hard and
had
a chance on 85 mins when Harrison was fouled on the edge of the box.
Whitby
cleared the kick. Another chance for Bridlingtn but Darren Fell's header
was straight at Escritt. In stoppage time a ball from the right was
crossed
to the back post where Whitby's Lynch fired a shot but Baxter made a
great
stop to deny him.

Bridlington Town 1 (0)(Collinson 60)
Hyde United 2 (0)(Tolson 50, 66)
Referee: C.Reeves - Tickton
Att: 211
Bridlington Town continued their league campaign against another of
the
favoured sides as they looked to maintain their unbeaten start. It was
not
to be as Neil Tolson grabbed a brace to give the visitors the points.
Town
thought they had an equaliser when Millock looked to have gathered over
the
line but they were denied.
Inside twenty seconds Town had got forward and Phil Harrison hit a volley
just wide of the mark. A break from Hyde caught the Town defence slightly
flat and a corner was gained. Taken short, Town could only give away
a
second corner but Hyde's Jones headed over. Hyde built again in attack
but
Town defended well to regain possession. The home side pushed up and
gained
a free kick for a foul on Palmer. Both Heath and Fell tried to direct
the
ball in but Millock gathered. As Hyde returned play they were awarded
a
free kick but Gaynor blazed the ball wide. On 21 mins a long clearance
from
Baxter was knocked on by Fell for Palmer. His attempted volley was
deflected for a corner though they gained nothing further. More forward
play from Town saw Palmer and Fell involved, then Harrison but Hyde
rode
their luck. Bridlington kept trying to build attacks but the extra height
in the Hyde defence proved a tricky obstacle. Hyde broke quickly and
Tolson
brought a good save from Baxter but Tolson had handled as he controlled
the
ball. Thacker lifted a neat ball through for Palmer, forcing Hyde keeper
Millock to leave his area to head clear. Harrison collected for Town
and
hit a flighted shot that drifted just over the bar on 35 mins. Town
worked
the left with Underwood and Palmer. The ball was lifted in and Harrison
saw
his shot blocked off the line by the feet of Millock as half time
approached. Hyde broke forward again and Johnson found a shooting
opportunity forcing Baxter to tip over.
Town brought on Gareth Collinson at half time and he soon had an
opportunity but pushed the ball just too far in front allowing Hyde
keeper
Millock to save. Hyde attacked and McNeil got into the box to bring
a pin
point block save from Baxter. Tolson followed up to knock the ball home
on
50 mins. Four minutes minutes later Hyde had another opprtunity as the
home
defence failed to clear but the sot was wide. Bridlington then attacked
and
Blake lifted a good ball in for Palmer but he glanced his header wide.
Harrison then fired straight at Millock as Town upped their workrate.
A
foul on Palmer gave a free kick 30 yards out. Collinson met Thacker's
free
kick to score from inside the six yard box on the hour, levelling matters.
Hyde looked to get back at Town and Johnson seemed to have beaten the
offside but he fired well wide of the mark. Hyde attacked again and
Tolson
was slotted through as the Town defence missed the clearance. He fired
under the advancing Baxter to regain the lead for Hyde on 66 mins.
Bridlington threw all at the Hyde defence but somehow they managed to
block
several shots before clearing. Town appealed for an equaliser when a
high
"bomb" was collected by Millock right on the line but they
were denied with
fifteen mins remaining. Acting captain Martin Thacker hit a well struck
shot on 81 mins but Millock was equal to it. Again Town attacked and
gained
a corner. The ball was half cleared and Blake fired goalwards but Millock
again saved Hyde. Hyde then looked to the wide areas of the pitch, looking
to retain possession as the game entered the last five minutes. Bridlington
still looked for the equaliser, pushing forward.

UNIBOND LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
TUESDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER 2004
WAKEFIELD & EMLEY 2
BRIDLINGTON TOWN 0
A fruitless trip to West Yorkshire for a re-shuffled Brid side. looking
to
get back on track after their first defeat of the seaon on Saturday.
Manager
Billy Heath was without wide men Craig Burdick and Paul Wilson, so
centre-back Steve Heath came into the midfield engine-room with Steve
Underwood moving out to the left and Kirk Blake occupying the right
flank.
Despite the reshuffling, the visitors started brightly with a diagonal
ball
from Paul Palmer setting up Martin Thacker who took the ball on towards
the
Wakefield box but was felled as he approached the area. He picked himself
up
to drift the free-kick in but the ball was cleared. Emley were soon
in the
game as Christian Fox angled in a corner which Bland met with a firm
header
that scraped the Brid crossbar.
Both sides were enjoying plenty of possession, but robust defending
was
keeping genuine chances to a minimum. Steve Underwood skipped past two
challenges on the right to feed Paul Palmer who beat the first marker
with a
deft flick but his shot was beat away by home keeper Wright. The ball
fell
to an Emley boot, and within seconds ex Harrogate Town marksman Robert
Pell
had forced a save from Nick Baxter in the opposing goal.
The home side were now starting to impose their physical advantage
on Brid,
and in a slick move, Fox, Pell and Muller forced a corner, which was
scrambled away. Town appeared stung by this and a fine through ball
by Kirk
Blake saw Gareth Collinson pulled down by Nick Wood. Martin Thacker
curled
in a trademark free-kick which flew past the post.
As half time drew near, the home side again began to pressure. A fluent
move
down the right involving Tonks and Muller saw the ball swing in for
Matt
Bland, who tested Baxter with a good header. Minutes later, Muller cut
inside and his shot was beaten out by Baxter. The ball was cut back
in, and
Rob Tonks found himself free inside the area to drive home past the
advancing Baxter.
HT W & E 1 BT 0
Brid took the field with Shaun Baker replacing Steve Underwood in the
centre, but it was still the home side who opened the stronger. Bland
and
Scott Clarke combined well forcing a fine interception from Steve Fisher.
Fifteen minutes from the restart Billy Heath introduced Darren Fell
to in
place of Gareth Collinson in attempt to get his side back into the match.
Fell was soon involved and a superb Steve Heath header sent him through
but
the home defence were able to clear. Emley continued to look the exert
their
physical advantage and looked the stronger, mopping up repeated Brid
efforts.
Diminutive playmaker Phil Harrison entered the fray, replacing Craig
Suddaby
on eighty-five minutes, and gave Town an increased goal threat as the
searched for an equaliser.
With players commited in attack, Brid fell victim to the sucker punch
in
injury time. A long ball out of defence enabled a three on one. Scott
Clarke
and Rob Pell exchanged passes and the ball was squared to Adam Muller
whose
powerful shot finished proceedings.

Att: 220
Referee: G.Ogden - Bolton
Bridlington Town snatched a dramatic stoppage time equaliser to share
the
spoils at Rossett Park after the home side had led on the hour. A red
card
for each side in the latter stages perhaps spoilt what was not a dirty
game, though intermittent heavy rain did not aid the flow of the game.
Both sides had early chances, Marines' Gary Randles seeing a shot deflected
for a corner at one end, then at the other Kirk Blake for Town met a
Paul
Palmer cross that earned a corner from a deflection. Marine showed next
with a Connolly header cleared off the line by Martin Thacker. Town
had to
make a substitution mid way through the half with Kirk Blake carried
off
and replaced by Craig Burdick. He was soon in action threatening the
home
defence but to no reward. A half way line tussle saw players from each
side
booked but Town pushed on and forced three successive corners but Marine
managed to clear each time. Five minutes before the break a long Town
free
kick was met by Lee Harper but his header was just wide. Nick Baxter
was
called into action twice in succession as the half closed to deny Marine.
Play swung both ways early in the second half but Marine gradually began
to
control the game. They took the lead on the hour. A bout of head tennis
on
the edge of the Town box saw the ball fall to Marines' Murphy. He fired
a
grass cutter through a crowd of players and the stretching Baxter just
couldn't keep the ball from nestling in the corner of the net. Marine
were
spurred on and Town had to contend with waves of attacking from the
home
side but with just over ten minutes remaining Marine skipper Connolly
was
given a second yellow card and sent from the field. Town could now look
to
attack the gaps but parity of numbers was restored when Town's Baldwin
also
received a second yellow and sent off. Still Town looked for an equaliser.
Gareth Collinson had a great chance from inside the box but fired over,
then in stoppage time a Town free kick from just inside the home half
was
lifted into the box by Thacker. Fisher rose to glance home the leveller
and
give the visitors a share of the spoils.

Referee: M.Brown - Hull
Bridlington Town were full value to get their second win and four goal
haul of the season. Three first half goals, Paul Palmer stunning first
being the pick of the bunch, were added to late on before Guisely grabbed
a late consolation with the last kick of the game.
In the fifth minute a Guiseley cross found Simon Parke unmarked at the
back and he fired a shot in that was well parried by Baxter. Guiseley
pressed forwards again and won a corner. Harper had to head behind for
a second corner. Town failed to clear and Hogg rifled a shot past the
right hand post just wide. From the goal kick Paul Palmer raced forward
and hit a stunning strike from over twenty yards past the diving Lamb
to open the scoring for the home side on seven minutes. Debutant Joe
Connor for Bridlington found Darren Fell on the left and after a one
two with Palmer slightly over hit the ball beyond Burdick in the box
and Guiseley cleared. Guiseley tried to push back at Town but another
long clearance from Baxter caused problems. Bridlington increased their
tally on 26 mins when Palmer was put through again. Lamb raced out to
parry his first effort but the ball fell kindly and Palmer lashed home
his and Bridlingtons second goal. On the half hour Paul Palmer
flicked on for Joe Conner who hit a first time 30 yard volley that Lamb
just managed to tip over the bar. Guiseley advanced, gaining a free
kick on the right but the looping effort went behind. Another long kick
from Baxter caught out the Guiseley defence. Palmer knocked the ball
to the back post where Joe Conner managed to stretch out a leg for a
debut goal on 35 mins. Guiseley broke forward, gaining a midfield free
kick. Chattoes effort only found Baxter in the Bridlington goal.
Another free kick, this time nearer, found Hogg down the right. He cut
in and Baxter had to palm over for a corner. The ball came in but was
headed over the bar.
After a pacey opening to the second half play was halted for an injury
to Guiseleys Stuart. An opening for Hogg saw him blaze wide and he was
then replaced by Forrest. Town pushed forward and Fell earned a corner.
Pushing in the box returned possession to Guiseley. Forrest got down
the right but after a throw in Town returned play up field. A nifty
run from Burdick saw him feed Fell who was upended earning a booking
for Chattoe as Fell was stretchered off. Substitutions for both sides
disrupted the flow slightly. Bridlington searched again with Palmer,
Collinson and Connor working the left. A neat ball in to Underwood then
earned a corner. Town couldnt capitalise and Guiseley broke forward
and earned a corner of their own. After Town had cleared Guiseley returned
again with David Henry getting a shooting chance but his soft effort
was saved by Baxter. Henry then got down the right to cross for Illingworth
who skied the ball. Illingworth got into the box again soon after but
was once more off target. With five minutes left Guiseley hit a long
lob from the side touch line that Baxter had to tipover to make sure
but Town cleared from the corner. A half way free kick for Town was
played crossfield, Palmer beat Parke to the ball and found Collinson
in the box who fired home Towns fourth goal. Guiseley spoilt the
Town party when they pushed up and with virtually the last kick of the
game Peter Sumner netted a consolation.

Bridlington Town 1 (1)(Thacker 26,)
Cammell Laird 5 (2)(J.Morgan 19, 37, Jebb 58, Lynch 69, Couch90+1)
Referee: A.Greenwood - York
Att: 201
Bridlington Town once more took the field with
a different starting line up
as two more players had succumbed to mumps, adding to the injury list,
and
the banana skin became well and truly lodged under the Bridlington Town
boots.
After a spirited start by the visitors, Town advanced and an opening
appeared for Martin Thacker but he sliced his attempt wide. Bridlingtn
began to probe down the left, Paul Wilson getting the ball in to Paul
Palmer. His attempted flick brought appeals for a penalty for hand ball
but
this was denied. After a little "ping pong" in the middle
of the park
Cammell Laird gained a free kick but couldn't penetrate much into the
home
box. A series of throw ins down the right gave the visitors further
opportunity but to no avail. Then a deep ball in found John Morgan and
the
home defence had to concede a corner though the home defence cleared.
On 19
minutes the visitors advanced and managed to get a cross in and John
Morgan
headed goalwards. Nick Baxter could only parry the ball against the
post
and though the home defence cleared off the line the assistant referee
ruled the ball had crossed the line and the visitors were in front.
Town
searched for an equaliser and gained a corner. Lee Harper headed over.
Town
got their leveller on 26 minutes. A free kick from Martin Thacker evaded
all and dropped just under the bar to nestle in the net. Cammell threatened
again with Clampitt slotting through for Morgan and Craig Suddaby having
to
concede a corner. A half clearance saw the ball fall to a Camell player
but
Baxter got down well to block. Cammell attacked again and Eddie Jebb
found
space to shoot. Baxter again parried but the ball fell kindly for Morgan
and he bundled the ball in for his and Cammell's second on 37 minutes.
With
their tails up, Cammell went on the attack again and a Jebb shot was
deflected wide. Town went on the attack and Phil Harrison laid the ball
back for Thacker. Cammell keeper Bimpson tipped over for a corner. Cammell
cleared and launched forward with Jebb getting a shot in that Baxter
had to
save as half time approached.
Bridlington saw good work by Harrison gain a corner but Thacker curled
the
ball behind. Cammell got down the right and Jebb cut into the box to
fire a
narrow shot. Baxter again parried but the ball rebounded to Jebb and
then
into the net to make it 3 - 1 to the visitors on 58 mins. A free kick
gave
Town a chance as the ball was put behind for a corner. Cammell cleared
and
Morgan raced forward into the clear looking for his third but his effort
hit the post on 65 mins. Town had to push forward to try to get back
into
the game but inevitably this left gaps at the back. Cammell were awarded
a
hotly disputed free kick on the edge of the home box and Anthony Lynch
fired the ball home for the visitors fourth goal. Town's Steeve Underwood
got the ball on the right and hit a looping shot onto the visitors bar
on
79 mins. Town continued to push and forced a couple of corners with
less
than ten minutes left, Suddaby heading just wide. In stoappage time
Cammell
broke forward and susbtitute John Couch fired home a fifth for the
visitors.

UNIBOND PREMIER DIVISON MATCH REPORT
BY JUSTIN CHOAT
21/09/04
OSSETT TOWN 5 BRIDLINGTON TOWN 1
(H/T 1-1)
An even first half left the away contingent unaware of the horrors
that lay ahead as a confident home side ran away with the game after
the interval to leave the injury-hit seasiders shellshocked. The introduction
of James Walshaw late on against a tiring defence was the key as his
pace left the Brid defence in tatters.
In blustery conditions, with both sides looking to get back on track
after early exits from the F.A. Cup, it was a nervous start, the ball
heading to and fro in the opening encounters, with neither side seeming
able to bring the ball down out of the gale. Stuart Baldwin and Paul
Palmer combined well on the left flank for the visitors, and Martin
Thacker looped in a free-kick which was dealt with by Jon Hood in the
home goal. Ossett were as yet struggling to impose themselves, but a
swift move involving Brown and Freestone drew a sharp save from Nick
Baxter.
As the half-hour approached, Brid again went on the offensive, with
Martin Thacker teeing up Stu Baldwin; his crisp drive just clearing
the bar. Minutes later, another Thacker delivery, this time from a free-kick,
was met by Paul Palmer, whose glancing header flew past Jon Hood to
put the visitors one-up. Minutes later, Hood was alert to fist away
another dangerous Thacker delivery as Brid looked to extend the lead.
Paul Wilson then got free on the left to spear in an excellent cross
that was just too strong for Craig Burdick at the far post.
With Brid looking to go in ahead at the interval, a long ball over
the top found Nestor, and his run on goal could only be halted by Craid
Suddabys lunge, with the referee rightly pointing to the spot.
Steve Prices effort was brilliantly saved by Nick Baxter, but
with the referee spotting Brid skipper Lee Harper encroaching into the
area, the kick was re-taken, the Ossett no. 4 making no mistake with
his second attempt.
H-T OSSETT TOWN 1 BRIDLINGTON TOWN 1
A similarly scrappy opening to the second half was again dominated
by the elements and it took at least five minutes for the first flowing
move, with Bridlington building down the right with Burdick and Thacker.
A long kick minutes later from Baxter gave Harrison a chance but Hood
was able to smother.
Ossett began their charge in the 50th minute as a long ball over the
top of the Brid defence found Nestor in a suspiciously offside position.
With the flag stating down though, he had time and space to fire past
Baxter to give his side the lead.
The seasiders heads appeared to wobble at this point , and the
next goal would be the decider. Ossett claimed it on the hour with a
similar finish as a defensive mix-up allowed Nestor to pick his spot
again.
Brid were now restricted to aiming the long ball over the top, but
an increasingly confident home side were dealing with this with ease.
Shaun Baker replaced Stuart Baldwin to add midfield bite with 20 minutes
to go, and it looked for a moment as the visitors had a chance, as Ossetts
Rob Hanby, after having being booked in the first half, felled Phil
Harrison for what looked like a certain second yellow and an early bath.
The referee somehow decided otherwise, and that appeared to seal proceedings,
as within minutes, Walshaw had been introduced for Hanby, and increased
the lead as he scampered clear of a static defence to add the fourth.
With a disjointed Brid side awaiting the final whistle, Walshaw further
broke the vocal seaside supporters hearts with a last-minute fifth.
This is now probably the biggest test of manager Billy Heaths
reign at Queensgate, and all Town fans will be hoping the big man can
again pull the right strings for the long trip to Witton on Saturday.
Bishop Auckland visit next Tuesday, and the seasiders need the fans
to get behind them more than ever for another crucial game.

This was a much improved performance from Town but the two main things
were
the thickness of the post denying Steve Fisher in the first half, then
the
defence losing Witton's Moseley fifteen minutes from time for him to
score
an unmarked header.
The first half saw the home side taking advantage of a strong wind to
keep
Town pegged back but Underewood, Burdick and Thacker were linking neatly.
Town still looked for an opening and a free kick from Thacker found
Steve
Fisher at the back but his header cannonned off the post and Witton
cleared. Witton had their spell of further pressure forcing several
corners
but the visitors held firm.
Mike Cooper came on at half time for his Bridlington debut as Bridlington
began to create much better football. Just before the hour a well struck
thacker shot brought a good save from Gibson in the home goal, the he
linked with BUrdick and Wilson who gave him a heading chance though
he
couldn't get the right power and direction as the ball went just wide.
Cooper then slotted Burdick through but the ball just ran away from
him. A
free kick gave Bridlington further hope but Gibson punched clear and
Witton
broke forwards with Madin getting to the right byline and crossed. Moseley
had evaded the home defence and headed home unmarked with fifteen minutes
left.
Despite their sterling efforts in the final quarter hour, Town couldn't
grab an equaliser and will be looking now to next Tuesdays home fixture
for
a change in fortunes.

Att: 137
Referee: B.Sygmuta - Northallerton
This was a much needed point for Town and they could have had all three
on
second half performance but early errors made it a mountain to climb.
After the opening exchanges the first chance for the home side came
on 6
mins when a free kick was awarded on the right, but unfortunately Martin
Thacker's ball in evaded all. With ten mins gone David Morgan for the
visitors got down the left to put in a deep cross that Robinson had
to put
for a corner. The ball was only half cleared and Chris I'Anson fired
the
ball home to open the scoring for the visitors. Bishops had another
chance
three mins later when a cross fcrom the right was headed over. Town
broke
to the other end and Kirk Blake saw his effort from the edge of the
box
charged down. As Brid looked forward a through ball saw Bishops keeper
Cleminson come out of the box to clear. Bishops attacked and a mix up
in
the Town box saw the ball fall for Jack Wilkinson who netted from a
couple
of yards to increase the visitors lead. Once more Bridlington looked
forward and gained a free kick on the right. This time Thackers cross
was
inch perfect for Steve Heath but his header hit the post and Bishops
cleared. A break for Bishops saw a through ball for Wilkinson and his
shot
went just wide of the mark as the half hour approached. Gareth Collinson
then fed Craig Burdick and his strike from outside the box was tipped
round
the post by a full stretch Cleminson. Bridlington attacked again and
Taylor
and Palmer linked down the right, Taylor crossed in a low drive, Collinson
deflected the ball goalward but it was blocked but Craig Burdick followed
up to net for the home side. More home pressure saw Shaun Baker looking
to
cross and some ping pong in the box saw Bishops clear. A throw in deep
in
the Bishops half saw a neatly worked move from Town that gave Palmer
a shot
on the turn and as the ball crossed the face of the goal Collinson just
failed to divert the ball in. Town attacked again and Kirk Blake saw
a
powerful shot saved in stoppage time of the half as Brid finished much
the
stronger.
The home side piled on early pressure in the second half looking for
an
equaliser, a corner gained no reward and Burdick had a shot blocked
before
Kirk Blake got through and lifted the ball over the keeper but just
wide of
the mark. Next Gareth Collinson had an effort deflected for a corner.
From
this there were loud appeals for a penalty but it was denied by the
referee. Bridlington's next attack saw the ball into the Bishop box
and
the assistant referee spotted a hand ball and a penalty was awarded
for the
home side. Martin Thacker sent the keeper the wrong way to level matters.
Next a free kick to the back post saw Burdick volley straight at Cleminson.
Bishops returned play and Wilkinson looked to get through but poked
wide as
Kelly advanced. Mid way through the half Martin Thacker made space to
volley just wide then a neat move with thacker and Burdick fed Collinson
who was just offside. A crossfield ball from Blake found Palmer who
was
fouled near the by-line. Thackers ball in was headed towards goal but
then
headed clear of the line. A foul on Burdick drew another free kick,
centrally 25 yards out. Thacker put the ball over the bar. Bridlington
advanced again for a corner. Burdick flicked on and Heath's volley on
the
turn was deflected for another corner but Town couldn't breach the defences
of the visitors. More neat play down the right from the home side and
the
ball came in to Thacker. He made space and should have scored but fired
over from the edge of the box with less than ten mins left. As the game
moved into stoppage time another free kick for Town 30 yards out. This
brought a corner but no more. A long ball from Kelly found Palmer and
his
dipping shot went just over. With almost the last effort of the game
another Town free kick a long way out but time ran out.

Bridlington Town 1(0)(Burdick 74)
Marine 1(0)(McNally 71)
Att: 184
Referee: J.P.Devine - Middlesborough
An early chance for Marine from an interception saw Tommy Taylor bring
a
save from Nick Baxter. Town attacked and Gareth Collinson cut into the
box
but his effort was blocked and fell to Shaun Baker who fired over.
Collinson again then attacked and fired from the edge of the box forcing
Marine keeper Chris Parry to tip over. Another clear chance for Collinson
when put through and he rounded the keeper to fire goalward but Marine
skipper James Connolly got back to clear off the line on 11 mins. Steve
Cain broke down the right for Marine and crossed for Ben Kay who fired
over. Paul Palmer was fouled for a free kick to Town 25 yards out.
Collinson diverted Thacker's free kick straight at Parry. Thacker spotted
Paul Palmer alone upfield and fed him the ball. He tried to lob Parry
from
distance. Parry managed to tip round for a corner. Parry again had to
be
alert just after the half hour when a Lee Harper header forced him to
save
on the line. Craig Burdick broke forward for Town, Fed Palmer and his
cross
forced a corner. The ball was half cleared and crossed back in where
Palmer
curled a shot that was deflected for another corner but Marine cleared
from
this.
Bridlington pressured from the off, keeping marine pegged back but couldn't
make a decisive ball in. A ball in from Burdick gave Collinson a chance
but
he couldn't get his foot round when unmarked in the box. Marine pushed
forward and a shot from Taylor brought Baxter's first real save of the
game. A mix up in the Marine box almost let Town in but the ball was
cleared for a throw in. Just after the hour Suddaby was caught in
possession and Taylor for Marine hit a snap shot that Baxter had to
tip
over. Town managed to clear the goal mouth scramble from the corner.
A long
ball from Marine earned a corner. Town failed to defend and Paul McNally
nipped in to head the visitors in front on 71 mins. Town were soon level.
Pushing forwards, Town gained a free kick on the left. Thacker swung
the
ball in, Parry failed to gather and Craig Burdick headed home on 74
mins.

UNIBOND PREMIER LEAGUE
5TH OCTOBER 2004
MATLOCK TOWN 0 BRIDLINGTON TOWN 0
MATCH REPORT BY JUSTIN CHOAT
A hard-earned point from the long midweek trip to the peak district
as a vocal and partisan home crowd saw their team unable to break down
a stubborn Brid team who remain a point above them in the table.
The game sprang to life as early as the second minute as Gareth Collinson
turned and shot inside the Matlock box but saw his effort rebound away
to safety. The home side responded minutes later with a long range Hopkins
effort that fizzed past the post.
The game opened up, with both sides creating chances. Simon Barraclough
was looking lively for the Derbyshire side, and it took a timely intervention
from Steve Robinson in the tenth minute to deny the Matlock striker
as he chased a through ball from Chambers. Nick Baxter in the Brid goal
then had the produce a sharp save from the same player minutes later.
The seasiders responded, and on 20 minutes, following good work from
Paul Palmer, an inswinging Thacker corner saw Lee Harper narrowly fail
to connect with a far post header. From the goal-kick, Matlock's Chris
James was injured in a challenge as the ball bounced loose in midfield.
The stretcher came on, but the no. 6 was able to walk gingerly off after
treatment to be replaced by Gareth Williams.
Brid showed more as the half wore on, with Craig Burdick escaping down
the left to fire in a low cross. The ball was only partially cleared
and Gareth Collinson's deft chip scraped the bar with back-pedalling
keeper Kevin Tye beaten. More chances at both end followed, Leroy Chambers
was proving a threat for the home side, and he swivelled to fire a shot
overe the Brid bar after a fine move down the right flank. Home 'keeper
Tye could then only fumble a skidding low drive from Paul Palmer and
was relieved to see the follow-up effort from Craig Burdick cannon off
a defender to safety.
HALF TIME MATLOCK TOWN 0 BRIDLINGTON TOWN 0
The visitors emerged for the second half with a change in midfield,
Dave Ingram replacing Shaun Baker. It was however Matlock who took charge
in the opening period of the half. A corner flew across the face of
the Brid goal with Baxter beaten but no home striker could provide the
finishing touch. Craig Suddaby then had to be alert with a fine interception
to deny Simon Barraclough a clear run on goal.
Brid should have turned the game on the hour. An intelligent through
ball from Martin Thacker put Paul Palmer away on the right. His low
cross had Tye in no-mans land but the onrushing Collinson somehow failed
to connect at the far post.
The large home crowd, up until then subdued, at last began to make
themselves heard, and their side began to ask all the questions in the
latter stages. Yet again though, the Brid defence proved outstanding,
restricting Matlock to only one real chance in the 85th minute. A diagonal
ball at last found it's way in behind the outstanding Steve Heath &
Lee Harper, only for Barraclough to fire his effort over the bar from
close range with colleagues screaming for the pass.
Light drizzle had by now become a steady downpour as the match drew
to a close, making the surface extremely greasy, with several long balls
from the home side faloing victim to a well-drilled offside trap. The
seasiders' Dave Ingram though showed the way with a couple of delightful
through passes to the ever-willing Paul Palmer, who had the small but
vocal away contingent on their feet with a break from one of these only
to be crowded out inside the penalty area.
Brid took the deserved ovation from the travelling support at the final
whistle, for what could be a vital point in a very tough campaign this
season.

Bridlington Town 2(2)(Thacker pen 22, Palmer 25,)
Prescott Cables 0(0)()
Referee: A.Halliday - Catterick
Att: 128
Bridlington Town gained a much needed three points aftger three successive
draws. Two goals in three first half minutes deciding matters.
A deep ball into the home box forced Steve Fisher to clear for a corner
but
Prescot couldn't benefit. For Bridlington, Craig Burdick looked ot slot
in
Gareth Collinson but the ball was cut out by the visiting defence. A
free
kick gave Town a chance but Phil Priestly in the Prescott goal gathered
easily. After a midfield scramble the ball found its way in to Prescot's
Jason Massie who shot just over. Town attacked and Ingram received the
ball
in the box but he was blocked as he looked to pull the trigger and fired
wide. Paul Palmer flicked on for Collinson down the left but Priestly
gathered his cross. A free kick for Prescot on the corner of the box
was
hit straight at Nick Baxter. He cleared and set Town forward again.
Prescot
returned upfield and Massie hit a stinging ball in that Baxter had to
cling
on to. Bridlington attacked and Craig Burdick was put through. Priestly
came out of his goal and brought Burdick down for a penalty. Martin
Thacker
confidently struck the ball home to give Bridlington the lead. Soon
after
a Steve Heath effort curled just over the bar. Town attacked again,
Craig
Burdick ran across, drew a defender and laid the ball into the path
of Paul
Palmer who rammed the ball home to extend Bridlington's lead. Mark Peers
was providing much of the Prescott threat and forced Steve Robinson
to
concede a corner though Town cleared. Next Prescot youngster Massie
tried a
lob from distance but was well over. Burdick attacked for Bridlington
and
laid the ball into the path of Mike Cooper who saw his well struck effort
saved at full stretch by Priestly. Dave Ingram then superbly fed Palmer
who's effort drew a corner. Burdick's header from the kick was cleared
off
the line by Simon Garner. Prescott attacked as half time approached.
Eddie
Taylor chipped Baxter but Steeve Fisher got back to clear off the line,
then Baxter had to tip a shot over and from the corner Ingram headed
clear.
The ball back in then saw a challenge on Baxter that left him injured.
He
continued after treatment. Another chance in stoppage time fell for
Peers
who sliced wide.
Prescot showed early in the second half, winning successive corners
but
nothing more. Mike Cooper broke out of defence and fed Burdick. He lobbed
Priestly but the ball drifted just wide of the goal. Paul Palmer hit
a
crossfield ball for Mike Cooper and his shot curled just wide of the
right
hand post. Prescot gained a free kick on the right outside the home
box.
Town cleared but David Chadwick fired the ball back in and Baxter gathered.
Kirk Blake put Burdick through but a good tackle from Prescot cleared
the
danger. The visitors attacked and McNutt fired a shot in that Fisher
blocked for a corner. Town moved forward and another good ball from
Ingram
fed Palmer. As Town pressed on \\\\Burdick was felled and a free kick
awarded 35 yards out. Thacker fired just over. At the other end McNutt
tricked his way into the box and Heath had to clear for a corner. Prescot
continued to attack but Chadwick sliced an effort well wide of the mark.
Prescot thopught they had pulled a goal back when a free kick was headed
in
by Lee Cooper but he was judged offside. Thacker lifted a neat ball
through
for Palmer as Bridlingtn looked to increase their tally but Cables were
spirited in their efforts to deny Town. A long shot from Peers saw Baxter
have to tip round. A deep ball from Prescot almost caught Town out but
Harper got back to clear inside the last ten minutes. Bridlington went
forward again, Thacker looking for Palmer, who got a throw in, but Prescot
then regained possession. McNutt again probed the left flank but the
home
defence cleared. With a minute remaining Paul Palmer beat the offside
trap
but fired straight at Priestly with Burdick unmarked screaming for the
ball. Prescot through everyone forward for a corner in stoppage time
but
the ball ran behind.
Thanks to Bridlington Town Juniors and Bridlington Rangers for providing
ball boys.

Bridlington Town 1(0)(Thacker 66)
Lincoln United 2(2)(Roche 40, Bull 44)
Att: 139
Referee: S.Rowntree - Scarborough
Bridlington Topwn were disappointed not to get
anything from this game
after dominating the second half but couldn't pull back from the two
goal
first half deficit.
The visitors had the better of the early exchanges, though made nothing
clean cut. Town attacked with Kirk Blake feeding in to Craig Burdick
but
the ball ran wide. A vicious ball in from Lincoln's Jon Hawley forced
Steve
Heath to lash clear, then a mystifyingly awarded free kick gave the
visitors another opportunity though Town again cleared. Town pushed
forward
and the ball fell to Shaun Baker who hit a dipping shot just past the
post
from well outside the box. Lincoln burst forward with Matt Roche down
the
left. His effort was deflected for a corner. Another break from Roche
saw
the referee blow for Heaths challenge but then after consulting his
assi
stant changed his mind and gave a drop ball. At the other end a free
kick
for Town saw Martin Thacker almost catch Nick Conroy off his line. A
neat
crossfield move feturing Dave Ingram, Paul Palmer and Kirk Blake saw
a shot
fly in but Conroy gathered. Play swung both ways but the defences and
keepers dealt with all threats until on 40 mins a clearance from Nick
Baxter was charged down and Roche nipped round him to fire the visitors
into the lead. Lincoln increased their lead just before half time when
Trout fed in from the left to Gary Bull. He made space to fire across
Baxter into the corner of the net.
The first half drizzle turned torrential for the start of the second
half
making for slippery conditions. Kirk Blake fired the ball across, Craig
Burdick laid it to off to Ingram whose fierce shot brought a good save
from
Conroy. Town pushed up looking to get back into the game but had to
be
careful not to leave gaps. A ball over the top almost caught Town out
but
Baxter blocked well from Bull's effort. Bridlingtn pushed back up field
and
Thacker hit a shot from distance that Conroy bundled round for a corner.
On
the attack again and the ball once more fell to Thacker. He hit a peach
of
a shot from 30 plus yards into the top of the net to pull Bridlington
back
into it. From the restart Town regained possession and Thacker hit in
a
free kick. Burdick and Harper threw themselves at the ball but neither
could connect with the goal gaping in front of them. Andy Taylor cut
past
three Lincoln defenders to get into the box but took a touch too much
and
lost possession. Town continued to press, a neat through ball found
Burdick
who looked to be fouled as he shot, though Conroy saved at point blank
range. A free kick for the home side on the right of the box. Harper
headed
just over from close range. Paul Palmer the got down the right, lifted
the
ball to Taylor at the back post who also headed the ball over. In stoppage
time a free kick on the left gave Town a chance but Conroy gathered.

Prescot Cables 3-2 Bridlington Town
Scorers -(Prescot) Connoly 10, Peers 23, Massie 48 - (Town) Burdick 6,
Thacker 45
Bridlington Town slip[ped to defeat on Merseyside but only after taking
the lead and failing to convert second half chances that could and should
have earned them at least a point. Town were bright from the start and
should have taken a 1st minute lead but Paul Palmer fired tamely at the
keeper when clean through. On 6 minutes the Seasiders broke the deadlock.
Paul Wilson got into the box from the right and his powerful shot was
parried by Paxton into the path of Craig Burdick who made no mistake from
the 6 yard line.
It only took Prescot 4 minutes to level. Town lost posession, McNutt broke
left and Set up Karl Connolly who fired across Nick Baxter and into the
far corner. On 20 minutes Town came close to regaining the lead but Burdicks
volley was blocked and the rebound was driven across the face by Kirk
Blake as Town kept up the pressure. It was the home side though who were
to score next. Town lost their concentration and a cross from the right
picked out the unmarked Mark Peers to head home unchallenged.
Prescot now had the upper hand and gained in confidense but Town battled
hard to keep it to 2-1 with Kirk Blake picking up a booking after catching
Prescots Sinon Garner which forced the home side into an early substituyion.
Town looked to have weathered the storm and nearly equalised when Palmer
met a Thacker free kick with a great header only for Paxton to acrobatically
turn the ball over. With the half drawing to a close, Prescot needlessly
conceded a free kick and before the home side could get organised Town's
Martin Thacker had drilled the free kick past the wall and into the top
corner to make it 2-2 at half time.
Town were caught out early in the second half with what proved to be the
decisive goal. The ball was played out to the right in the 48th minute
and was met perfectly by Jason Massie who had stolen a march on the Town
defence, to make it 3-2.
Town tried to battle backand brought on Mike Cooper for Paul Wilson. Chances
came and went with Palmer inexplicably failing to pull the trigger when
required. A Thacker free kick was then saved by the keeper and Burdick
headed narrowly wide from a corner. Mike Cooper also forced a save with
a good volley and in the dying minutes Paul Palmer had the ball in the
net but was somewhat harshly judged to have handled as the ball bounced
up. Time ran out for Town and they will again look back at missed chances
in a game they could have taken points from. Town must now look to pick
up points from the next two games, both away from home, at Guiseley on
Tueasday and Gateshead next Saturday.

It was another game of missed chances and a gifted goal for the opposition
that was the undoing of Bridlington Town.
Guiseley started with pace from the off but the visitors were soon back
at
them with Craig Burdick heading wide from a corner. Guiseley took the
lead
with a gifted goal just before the quarter hour. A high lob forced Brid
skipper Lee Harper to head back but keeper Nick Baxter slipped as he
came
for the ball and David Henry nipped in to tap the ball home.Bridlington
created chances for Burdick and Harper but both their efforts were
thwarted. Guiseley worked up field once more. A corner was scrambled
away
by the Bridlington defence but two more corners in quick succession
finally
saw Mark Stuart stab home to increase the lead for the home side.
guiseley's third goal was the pick of their tally. A neat crossfield
ball
ind interplay saw Parke lay the ball off for Mark Stuart to slot home.
The
visitors came close to pulling one back from a fre kick that was spilled
by
John Lamb but his defence cleared, but on the stroke of half time a
half
way free kick was fired into the box by Martin Thacker and Lee Harper
flicked the ball past Lamb for Bridlington's goal.
BRidlington showed first in the second period but Guiseley had the best
early chance when Hunt hit the side netting. Bridlington then began
to
create more and more chances, Paul Wilson firing over, Harper and Paul
Palmer going close with headers and Dave Ingram forcing a corner after
a
good run into the box and seeing his effort turned round by Lamb.
Bridlington's hopes were raised with five minutes left when Guiseley's
Simon Parke was shown the red card for dissent, but despite their efforts
they couldn't pull back the deficit.

Bridlington Town put in their best performance of recent weeks and
fully
deserved their point but once more should have taken all three. Lady
Luck
was elsewhere again as Town hit the woodwork three times.
Dominating from the off, Paul Wilson brought a save from Gateshead keeper
Connell before Martin Thacker tried his luck. NExt Paul Palmer cut into
the
box and fired past Connell, only to see his shot come back off the inside
of the far post, run back across the face of the goal then spin behind
for
a goal kick. Town took the lead just before the break when debutant
James
Tomlinson headed forward, Craig Burdick laid the ball off for Palmer
and he
rammed the ball home.
Bridlington continued to press in the second half but Gatehead began
to
slowly work back into the game and gain some possession. Town almost
added
to their lead on the hour when Craig Burdick hit a sweet shot on the
turn
that Connell tipped round for a corner. Gatehead then had a spell of
pressure and Gavin Kelly in Town's goal made to superb blocks in quick
succession to deny the Geordies, but they were soon level from a free
kick.
Mark Atkinson found the top corner from the kick 25 yards out. Town
pressed
forward looking to regain the lead. The outstanding Mike Cooper crossed
in
from the right and Craig Burdick's header was tipped onto the post and
his
follow up then hit the other post as Gatehead lead a charmed existance.
The
home side then swiftly broke up field, crossed in a Paul Taylor just
got in
front of the visiting defence to glance a header past Kelly to give
Gateshead the lead. Bridlingtn threww everything at Gateshead in search
of
an equaliser and it came deep into stoppage time. Cooper crossed in

Referee: R.A.Salt - Northallerton
After early pressure and a corner kick from Bridlington, Farsley pushed
up
and matt Smithard found space for a shot but fired well wide. Both teams
probed and Bridlington's Martin Thacker was just wide with a shot from
distance. Paul Wilson then made a run toward the box, appeared to be
fouled
but advantage was played and Paul Palmer saw his effort deflected wide.
On
the quarter hour a neat ball in from Mike Cooper found Wilson but his
side
foot shot was saved by Morgan in the Farsley goal. A long ball out of
defence by Gavin Kelly was flicked on by Palmer and Craig Burdick was
fouled as he ran through. From the kick Paul Palmer headed goalward
and
Morgan had to tip round. Farsley threatened with Midwood evading several
tackles but the home defence eventually cleared. Farsley gained a corner,
the ball broke free to Knowles and he crossed in for Connor who headed
wide. Wilson showed neat skill in the middle and fed the ball wide for
Cooper. He crossed and Burdick went in to head but he was judged to
have
fouled keeper Morgan. Farsley worked a series of throw ins down the
right
before Smithard got into the box but Kelly saved bravely. Town went
forward
again and Wilson hit a sweet cross but the Farsley defence just beat
Palmer
to the ball to clear. Stamer picked up a loose ball and cut in but fired
over. HT 0 - 0
An early second half effort from Farsley's Stamer meant Kelly had to
be
alert but Town pushed back up field and gained a free kick 25 yards
out but
Thacker hit straight at the wall. Bridlington's next chance came ten
minutes into the half when Craig Burdick's effort was slightly deflected
and ent into the grateful hands of Morgan. Farsley broke and Stamer
fed
Midwood. Steve Heath made a great defensive tackle and Carl Giblin cleared
for a corner. As Town returned play up field Palmer was fouled again.
Farsley cleared and broke forward only to see Curtis Bernard fire wide.
Farsley attacked again and a deflected cross fell kindly for Mark Bett
who
fired past Kelly to open the scoring. Bridlington pushed up in search
of an
equaliser but left gaps. A crossfield ball from Farsley found Stamer
in
space and he fired across Kelly for the visitors second goal. Mike Cooper
for Town tried a long range lob from the left and the ball floated just
past the far post with the game inside the final ten minutes. Midfield
errors from town kept giving possession back to Farsley but the home
side
still plugged away. A corner was earned in the last minute. Harper flicked
and Leech could only fire wide of the mark.

Bridlington Town 2(0)(Harper 67, Brown OG 78)
Att: 240
Referee: KW Haycock
The pitch conditions at Mossley seemed a tribute to the 10th aniversary
of
the lottery, with both sides often struggling to keep their feet, but
it
was a cup tie with a little of everything. Four goals including a cracking
own goal, a sending off, and a stoppage time equaliser, all interspersed
with several refereeing decision that made talking points for the
spectators.
Town had started well enough and gained several corners from their forward
play but the nearest they came to scoring was just before the quarter
hour.
Thacker and Ingram had combined well for another corner and HArper saw
his
header cleared off the line by Coyne. Mossley were restricted to rare
breaks from Giggs and Morning but the visiting defence dealt reasonably
comfortably. Steady drizzle compounded the slippery conditions and the
game
was goalless at half time.
MOssley upped their game in the second half and pushed forward forcing
several corners but when one was only partly cleared, the cross back
in was
headed upwards and fell into the gap between the Bridlingtn defence
and
keeper Baxter. Downey nipped through into the gap to fire home for Mossley.
It took the visitors ten minutes to equalise and credit to manager Billy
Heath for a tactical substitution. He replaced ingram with defender
Suddaby
and pushed skipper Harper forward. Harper made immediate effect, getting
on
the end of a Giblin cross to knock the ball in and level the scores.
Mossley had their hopes raised when five minutes later Thacker was sent
off
for a late challenge but it was the visitors who went ahead through
a freak
goal. Town had played the ball forward down the left and with their
strikes
bearing down on the ball, Mossley captain Brown became the villain of
the
piece as he miss hit a back pass to score an own goal from 25 yards
over
his advancing keeper Timms. Mossley threw all forward and pressured
constantly over the last ten minutes and twominutes into stoppage time
Goodeve got free on the left and cut into the box to fire goalward.
The
ball squirmed under Baxter at his near post and Brown turned hero from
villain and knocked the ball in to level and take the game to a Tuesday
night replay.

performed the overhead bicycle kick to loop the ball over Ashley Timms.
Wilson was soon in action again going close with a shot. At the other
