FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round replay

Farsley Celtic               3(1)(Midwood 27, 47, Austin 82)

Bridlington Town   0(0)()

Referee: G.Lomas – Sheffield

Att: 182

Bridlington Town were second best in this replay as they failed to score for the first time this season despite hitting the post and the bar. And it was Saturdays nemesis, Mike Midwood, who did the damage with a goal in each half before Ben Austin wrapped things up for the home side.

After a fairley even start Midwood had the first chance to shoot on ten minutes but his effort was well blocked and Town began to make inroads. Danny Drayton had a shot saved and then a neat flick from Craig Burdick fed Paul Palmer but he shot wide. Town won several corners and had pushed up in search of a goal, but Farsley broke quickly with four on three. The ball went out right to Smithard and he crossed. Midwood gathered and turned to fire the opening goal on 27 minutes. Town keeper Gavin Kelly had to be alert five minutes later but saved well from Smithard. Bridlington pressured again but couldn’t find a way through, Burdick shooting just wide before the break.

Farsley gave Bridlington a mountain to climb early in the second half. Freeman fed the ball wide to Smithard, he crossed in to the unmarked Midwood who made no mistake from the edge of the box. 2 – 0. Farsley began to use their home pitch to their advantage and  played the gaps well, keeping Bridlington on the back foot and almost added another on 53 mins when the Bridlington defence gave them too much space but recovered in time to clear. Farsley thought they had added to their tally two minutes later but Smithard was judged offside. Town made a couple of substitutions and as the hour approached threatened the Farsley box. A free kick on from the right found Harper and his shot rebounded off the post.Town attacked again and this time Burdick met the ball coming in and his shot cannoned off the bar, it looked to have bounced behind the line, but the referee waved play on and Farsley cleared. Still Town looked to get back in the game and Kevin Smith put a good cross in but Steve Ball defended well to clear. Inside the last ten minutes Farsley broke down the right and the ball was crossed into the Town box. A couple of players only managed glancing touched and Ben Austin gathered at the far post to rifle the ball home and seal the game for Farsley.
