WHITLEY BAY 4 BRIDLINGTON TOWN 0
MATCH REPORT BY JUSTIN CHOAT
Town were again broadsided out of the cup at the first exit by a team that
made a mockery of the Northern Leagues standing in the non-league pyramid.
Town did not play too badly, but the attacking flair of the home side, led
by ex-Newcastle United striker Paul Robinson, was breathtaking, and Town
simply had no answer.
It took only 7 minutes for Bay to make their mark. A through ball was
judged to perfection, and Kevin Walton held of 2 challenges to stride
through on the edge of the box and fire home. Town fans were yelling for
offside, but the linesman had got it spot-on and kept his flag down.
Frontman Adam Johnston was causing all manners of problems for the Town
defence with his movement off the ball, and was unlucky not to add to the
score. Leadbitter somehow bundled a header over from inside the 6-yard box
on 17 minutes.
The lively Paul Wilson tried to spark Town into a reply, linking well with
Mark Swales, but the threat was quickly snuffed out.
Bay widened the gap on 38 minutes. Johnston swung in a cross, and
Leadbitter powered home a close range header with Baxter helpless.
Demonstrating their total superiority at this stage, they made it 3-0 four
minutes later with a stunning goal. John Watson took a through ball in his
stride, and bent the ball over Nick Baxter with the outside of his boot. A
potential goal of the season was prevented only by the bar, but Brian Rowe
crashed the rebound home.

Whitley Bay 3 Brid 0
The second half was a more balanced affair, with Bay having done the hard
work. Brid probably shaded it on possession, but despite the efforts of
Wilson, Mark Swales and the promising Seb Towse, on a substitute, no reward
was to come. Brid always had to beware of the lightning pace on the
counter, with substitute Lee Kerr another handful.
Kerr tormented a tiring Brid defence, in which all the centre-back
partnership of Carl Giblin and Steve Heath were outstanding, and bay could
have added to the score, with 2 shots off the post in quick succcession.
Paul Palmer replied with an effort that shkimmed the Bay bar in the 80th
minute, but it simply was not going to be Brids night.
A deserved fourth came on 89 minutes. Kerr again shrugged off Giblin in the
chase for a through ball. Baxter pushed the winger wide, but Giblin chopped
him down for an obvious penalty, put away comfortably by Leadbitter.
