Whitby provided Bridlington with their stiffest test so far in an entertaining game at the Turnbull. The visitors had the better of the chances but could only convert one and Whitby had one disallowed for offside before levelling.
Bridlington had the better of the opening 20 mins with Smith and Harris causing problems for the home defence. Thacker and Burdick both saw shots saved by Campbell in the Whitby goal. Whitby had chances on the break when Gildea headed over and Johnson failed to get power in a shot and Hill collected easily. Whitby came more into the game and neat play between the forwards gave Johnson a chance but Bridlington defended well and cleared setting another attack on the way. Smith gathered in the middle and skilfully created space to turn and shoot just over. HT 0 – 0
Palmer came on for Harris for the start of the second half and was soon in the thick of things, tormenting the Whitby defence. It took two defenders to stop him and force a shot wide. Whitby attacked back and McTiernan curled a shot just past the angle. Back at the other end Smith gathered on the right and beat two defenders to shoot but just wide. Drayton then replaced Smith and Bridlington turned up the pressure. Palmer and Farley linked well to find Drayton and his shot on the turn flashed past the post but the wrong side. Bridlington regathered possession and were awarded a free kick to the left of the Whitby area. Thacker stroked the ball in and it rattled off the crossbar but Drayton was on hand to loop the ball over the Whitby keeper to open the scoring on the hour. 0 – 1. Whitby attacked from the restart and pressured. They thought they had equalised but the linesman had flagged for offside on 62 mins. More Whitby pressure earned a corner that was only half cleared and the cross back in to the far post was headed in by Nicholson on 64 mins. 1 – 1. The visitors continues to attack with runs coming from all areas. Drayton stole the ball off a Whitby defender and laid it in to Palmer who was unmarked in the box. But Palmer blasted the ball over. Bridlington introduced several more substitutes and continued to pressure and Drayton was unlucky to see the Whitby keeper parry his shot on the turn. Still more pressure from the visitors but the winner wouldn’t come as the home goal seemed to lead a charmed life as both Palmer and Drayton saw shots in quick succession cleared off the line. FT 1 – 1
