BRIGG TOWN 3 BRIDLINGTON TOWN 2
So near for Town, who took the game to the home side in a fine opening
spell, only to fall victim to defensive errors before a rousing finish in
which they could have grabbed a deserved point.
Paul Palmer went close for the Seasiders in the opening attack in only the
2nd minute as he latched onto a through ball from Paul Wilson to see his
shot cleared to safety. Matt Fyvie was also involved as he burst into the
box to crash the ball from a Martin Thacker free-kick against Brigg
centre-back Housham who knew little about it but the ball flew harmlessly
into touch. Shaun Baker was next, as his header skimmed the bar from a
Palmer cross.
Ben Sherwood was also finding space on the right, and made ground to fire
in
an agled rising drive which cannoned off the post with home keeper Damian
Steer nowhere. Brid were still searching for the opener on the quarter hour
as Shaun Baker sidestepped his marker 30 yards out to try his luck from
distance, and the ball dipped narrowly over the bar.
Ominously for Town, all these chances were having an end product, and the
home side gradually began to find their mark in the game. A long diagonal
ball found Lee Warren in space on the right hand side of the box, and he
fired his shot inches wide of Nick Baxters post. Again on the half hour,
Tom Spall was able to curl in a free-kick which Simon Roach almost connected
with inside the area, and on 36 minutes, with Brid thinking they had done
enough to stifle the threat, a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard area by
Rob Thompson saw the ball skid and bobble over the unfortunate Baxter, who
could only curse the surface and the weather.
Another classic sucker punch felled Town on 44 minutes as they poured
forward in search of the equaliser. A long ball forward was hacked away for
a corner, and from the resulting ball in, Brett Nilssen was left with far
too much space in the area to crash the ball home from close range.
HALF TIME BRIGG TOWN 2 BRIDLINGTON TOWN 0
The home side emerged determined to put the game to bed with a flurry of
chances in the opening minutes. Roach shot wide when well placed and Warren
tested Baxter with a low shot. Baker had another long range effort fall
just over the bar as Brid replied, before Carl Giblin produced a quality
tackle to deny Brigg striker Stu Ainsley a clear run on goal.
With Town again gaining the initiative, the home side again took the breath
from the sizeable away support with a 3rd goal in the 56th minute. With
perhaps justifiable claims for holding as he turned in the box, Stu Ainsley
seized on a loose ball to drive the ball beyond Baxter to spark long and
loud protests. The referee was having none of it, the goal stood, and Brid
were again looking down the barrel.
Martin Thacker tried to spark Brid in the 61st minute with a fine curling
20-yarder, but again somehow, Brigg turned defence into attack, and the ball
was with Ainsley again, who this time fired his shot wide. Matt Fyvie tried
to go one better minutes later with a surging run down the right. He held
off two markers to crack a low shot wide. New signing Matt Ramsay, from
Humber League side Sculcoates, who enjoyed a fine debut, was unlucky not to
cap his first game in Town colours with a goal as he connected well to a
Thacker corner to send his header off the bar.
Palmer was again unlucky in the 73rd minute, as he sped through the channel
on the right flank to drive in a shot that had Steer beaten all ends up only
to be defeated by the upright. Ben Sherwood was also unfortunate not to
find the net, a similar run and shot on the opposite flank being well
blocked by Steer. Shaun Baker had Town fans on their feet at last in the
90th minute, as he guided a Thacker corner beyond the reach of Steer for
Towns second. The board showed 3 minutes of added time, and hearts were
in mouths as a long Thacker ball over the top saw Palmer and Sherwood
closing on Steer, who beat the to the ball by inches.
Again, a creditable display by Town, who desperately need a touch of luck
in
front of goal to reward their hard work. A home game this Saturday
against Clitheroe will hopefully see a healthy crowd at Queensgate to help
give the side the confidence to move back into the top half of the table.
