Unibond Division One Spalding United 2 Bridlington Town 0
Town came off second best to a determined and organised home side, although
arriving a mere 20 minutes before kick-off after the long cross-country trek
was hardly the best preparation.
Both teams were greeted by a swirling gale-force wind and a heavy rutted
pitch that made any orthodox tactics impossible. Brid fielded new signing
Alistair Benson in attack, and he shaped well against a muscular Spalding
rearguard.
With the elements dominating the evening, it was always going to be the side
who made the least mistakes who had the better chance of a result. This
proved the case on 21 minutes, as a slip-up in the Town defence let in Kev
Childs. He raced clear only to brought down by Town keeper Nick Baxter
for
a certain penalty. Tom Cooke put the spot-kick away confidently to give the
home side the lead.
Town began to dominate after the half-hour mark, as first Matt Fyvie and
then Steve Heath went close in quick succession. Paul Wilson carved out a
great chance for Fyvie with a teasing left-wing cross, but defender Dan
Hussey somehow got to the ball first ahead of the Town frontman and hacked
the ball to safety.
In added time, Town again were fatally caught napping when it mattered. In
a horrible echo of the first goal, Childs strode clear, Baxter could only
bring him down, and Cooke was again faultless with the penalty.
Manager Billy Heath rang the changes in the second half as Town fought
manfully to level the game. Andy Neill enjoyed a profitable 20 minutes but
could not unfortunately add the vital finishing touch. Town threw players
forward in the closing stages and from Paul Wilsons 88th minute cross,
any
one of several red shirts could have forced the ball home but home
centre-back was able to launch the ball downfield and out of harms way.
Again in the 90th minute, Wayne Lewis and Wilson worked brilliantly down the
left to set up Benson, but Towns last chance evaporated as his shot
was
blocked.
