SATURDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER 2005
SHEPSHED DYNAMO 0 BRIDLINGTON TOWN 0
BUTT HOLE LANE, SHEPSHED
A tremendous point for Billy Heaths troops against a direct side stacked
full of height. Shepshed used their physical advantage along with the slope
in the first half, and it took a gutsy display by Town to weather the storm.
Town were able to create more after the break, but again were indebted to
Nick Baxter who pulled off a couple of superb stops at the death to preserve
the scoreline.
Dynamo were the stronger side from the off, and it took only 3 minutes for
Steve Gomm to flick a header into the path of Nathan Scott on the right hand
angle of the 18-yard box. Nick Baxter did well to beat the ball away to
safety. Baxter was quickly into action again, as the same player latched
onto a long ball over the top. The Town keeper scurried off his line to
whip the ball off the strikers toes.
It was all Shepshed in these early stages. A fine 1-touch move along the
left flank involving Gomm and Darryl Thomas let in Scott again on 10 minutes
, who curled a 20-yarder just past the upright.
Town were struggling to get to grips with the game, and it was not until
the
half-hour mark that they constructed their first real attack. Ben Sherwood
linked well with Martin Thacker to find Paul Palmer in space on the edge of
the 18-yard area, who tested Dynamo keeper Simon Baldwin with a well
struck
drive. Back came the home side. Scott was fouled on the edge of the Town
box in the 36th minute, and Paul Gamble sent the free-kick whistling past
Baxters post.
Shaun Baker had the last chance of the half for Town in the 42nd minute. A
Thacker free-kick just outside the box was half-cleared and his midfield
colleague looped a shot narrowly over the bar.
HALF-TIME SHEPSHED DYNAMO 0 BRIDLINGTON TOWN 0
A more confident start for Brid taking their turn down the slope, as again
Sherwood and Thacker combined well through the midfield. Former Ferriby man
Sherwood was giving away several inches and pounds in the battle against the
Dynamo defence, but displayed a fine appetite for the game and looks another
good addition to Billy Heaths side.
Baxter was into action again on the hour mark, as Gomm cracked in an angled
shot which the Town keeper held well. Loose defending by Town let in
Thomas minutes later, who flashed his drive inches past the post. Heath
introduced Paul Wilson into the game for Liam Cattermole to boost the
attack, and new signing Matt Fyvie, from Westella & Willerby, took the
field replacing Chris Hyam for his Town debut shortly afterwards. Wilson
provided a outlet for Town on the left, and Fyvie, making the step from
Humber League football, settled quickly onto the ball to give Town more
options going forward.
Wilson found Palmer in the next Town move on 72 minutes, his instant shot
being deflected for a corner. The ball in found Fyvie, who was crowded out
by the home defence. Shepshed then made a double substitution on 74
minutes, with Jovan Maric and Tony Howell replacing Chris Woodhall and the
unlucky Scott. This seemed to work, as a lightning break from Dynamo down
the right released Thomas, and Baxter again showed his mettle with a fine
block.
Andy Neill entered the fray for Town replacing Ben Sherwood for the last
ten
minutes, and his ability to hold the ball up proved priceless for Town as
they battled for the point. Dynamo were again unlucky as Town now began to
feel the pace. Sloppy defending allowed Thomas room on the left hand side
of
the box, and for once Baxter could only watch as the ball fizzed past his
post. Town were reeling, but Wilson showed fantastic control and footwork
under pressure on the edge of his own area to bring the ball away from
danger. He found Neill, whose first time lay off was inches away from
setting up Palmer for a breakaway effort.
Baxter was the hero for Town as the game went into added time with 2 quality
saves in quick succession from Gomm and Thomas to break the home sides
hearts. The referees whistle brought relief to the Town supporters
clustered behind the dugout, who gave the team a well-deserved ovation as
the left the field.
Town head over the Humber to Brigg this Wednedsay (28th) with Billy Heath
knowing he has a fully committed squad at last this season and can be
pleased with the application shown by his lads against a far more physical
opposition. 2 or 3 key players were again missing through injury and
suspension against Shepshed, and with some of the new additions to the side
making a 2-league jump in class, everyone can be pleased with the outcome
of
the game.
