Matlock Town 3 (3)(Taylor 11, Holland 20,45)(Williams S/O 1)
Bridlington Town 5 (2)(Thacker 2, Burdick 21, 54, 85, Palmer 67)
Att: 280
Referee: I Smedley - Derby

Bridlington Town rattled in five goals against ten man Matlock but had to
work very hard against a well organised and spirited home side.
Just 58 seconds were on the watch when Town attacked, Matlock keeper Kevin
Tye failed to hold a shot, Paul Palmer pounced and Matlock's Gareth Williams
handled on the line with a diving save. The referee had no alternative but
to dismiss him from the field. Tye saved the resulting penalty from Thacker
but he made amends by following up to net the rebound and give the visitors
the lead. Matlock refused to lie down and Steve Taylor and Danny Holland
caused several problems for Bridlington and a ball over the top bounced
awkwardky between Steve Robinson and Lee Harper. Matlock's Steve Taylor
nipped in and fired under Gavin Kelly to level the scores on 11 mins. Bouyed
by this success Matlock strike pair continued to cause problems for the
Bridligton defence with their strength and awareness and an unfortunate
ricochet fell into the path of Danny Holland and he fired home to give
Matlock the lead on 20 mins. From the restart Bridlington attacked down the
right, Craig Burdick cut into the box and fired in to level just a minute
later. MAtlock still were well organised in their efforts and took advantage
of loose passing late in the first half stoppage time. A lomg shot was fired
in and Kelly failed to hold, the ball rebounding off his chest as it skidded
off the grass. Holland collected and rammed the ball back in to give the
home side a 3 - 2 half time lead.
AN ear stinging half time talk from manager Billy Heath saw him make two
substitutions for the second half, bringing on Andy Taylor and Dave Ingram
to replave Andy Thompson and Jamie Cass. This gave Bridlington more width in
their play and they began to exploit the gaps of the ten man home side. From
a throw in down the right Andy Taylor croseed in, the ball came back to him
to cross again and Paul Farley hit a powerful shot. Tye could only parry and
Burdick followed up to hit his second goal to level things again on 54 mins.
Bridlington were in full flow now, attacking constantly and went in front on
67 mins. Craig Burdick had been fouled and Martin Thacker swung in the
perfect free kick for Paul Palmer to power home a header. Matlock were still
dangerous on the break but were tiring and Bridlington wrapped things up
with five minutes remaining. Ingram collected in the middle to fire in a
shot from distance, Tye could only parry the ball and Burdick latched on to
slot home for his hattrick and Bridlington's 5th goal.
A much needed three points to keep Bridlington in the hunt for the top spot
though credit to a battling Matlock side, especially the front pairing of
Taylor and Holland, and some of the Bridlington players rmarking that the
referee was one of the better ones this season.
