UNIBOND LEAGUE DIVSION ONE
TUESDAY AUGUST 23RD
GOOLE 2 BRIDLINGTON TOWN 2
MATCH REPORT BY JUSTIN CHOAT

A tremendous see-saw encounter at the Victoria Pleasure Ground that brought
a deserved point for Town, who shrugged off the early loss of key men Lee
Harper and Carl Giblin through injury to take the game to the home side in
the second half.

Goole opened the stronger, and with only 7 minutes on the clock, a long ball
over the top found Steve Davey. Lee Harper slipped in attempting to
intercept, and Davey was able to fire across the helpless Nick Baxter into
the far corner. Harper had clearly hurt himself in the challenge and limped
off minutes later. It was unfortunate on Baxter, in for his first start
after a lengthy absence from the side.

Town quickly reorganised and went for the equaliser. The home side were
playing a dangerous game with their offside trap, with the pace of Paul
Palmer deceiving the linesman on more than one occasion into raising his
flag. The revitalised Paul Wilson was again figuring in the Town attack, and
he grabbed the deserved leveller on 25 minutes. Shaun Baker threaded the
ball through from midfield, and the winger steadied himself before firing
low past Mitchell for his first goal of the season.

Back came Goole, as a corner was headed inches over by Danby. Giblin had
taken a knock in defending this attack, and he too hobbled off. This left a
completely new-look rearguard in which Steve Swales was a makeshift
centre-half.
Constable flashed a shot wide on 40 minutes, but the Town defence held well
until the break.

HALF TIME
GOOLE 1 BRID TOWN 1

The home side again opened the stronger. Baxter did well to fist away an
inswinging corner as their direct style began to cause problems. Swales
however showed all of his professional nous to marshal the defence and was
magnificent in an unfamiliar role.

Brid weathered htis storm and began to create again. Mark Swales saw his
18-yard shot well turned away by Mitchell, and great work again by Wilson
down the left forced an opening for Palmer who was robbed of the ball at
the last moment by Watts. The Goole centre-back was again in the thick of
thngs as he diverted a Wilson coss over his own bar with Mark Swales lurking
at the back post.

A slip by Chris Hyam inside his own half on 70 minutes almost let in
Dickinson, but the ex-grimsby man recovered superbly to take the ball back
as the Goole wide man prepared to shoot.
Baxter then had be alert to tip over an effort from Gorman as the home side
threatened again.

Town took the lead on 74 minutes with an absolute belter. Steve Underwood
was first to a Wilson cross, and his flick on was met by Mark Swales who
leaped and twisted to crash home a stunning volley over Mitchell into the
top corner.

The home side roared back. Baxter again rescued his side, his fingertip
save forcing a close range header from Eastwood over the bar.
Could the visitors hold on? The small but vocal Brid support were shouting
themselves hoarse in encouragement as again Swales and Steve Heath were a
brick wall in front of Baxter. Veteran Wayne Lewis was rolling back the
years at full-back, and was another on the night to emerge with nothing but
credit.

No one could be faulted for the equaliser. Goole did what Town had done on
Saturday, and in injury time, Dickinson at last worked a fraction of space
inside the box to hit a fine low shot that Baxter hardly saw through the
legs.

A massive response to Saturday's performance from all concerned. Paul
Wilson in particular stood out with a 100% display that featured not only
his usual attacking flair but also, pleasingly, wholeheated commitment in
defence. Rivalled Steve Swales for man-of-the-match.
Most watching felt Goole will be a difficult side to beat at the VPG this
season, and Town should be applauded for this result. Three points will come
sooner rather than later on this showing.
