Unibond Division One
Leek Town 2(1)(McPherson 15, White 83, Thornhill 87)
Bridlington Town 2(1)(Smith 9, Thacker pen 61) (Cass S/O 71, Farley S/O 88)
Att: 288
Referee: C.Byrne – Stockport
Bridlington Town went down 3 – 2 away at Leek and had two men sent off in the process. Kevin Smith gave the visitors an early lead but Lee quickly levelled through McPherson. Bridlington led again in the second half from a Thacker penalty but the sending off of Jamie Cass for a second yellow turned the game for the home side. A suspiciously offside looking header and a free kick in side the last ten minutes gave the home side the points.
After a sprightly opening from both sides Bridlington took the lead. Paul Farley broke down the right and crossed for Kevin Smith who powered home a header on nine minutes. Leek then pressured with Thornhill down the left and his crossed ball went right across the face of the Bridlington goal. Leek were then awarded a free kick and from a block the ball came to Ridley. Kelly parried the shot but McPherson got up to head in the equaliser on the quarter hour. Frequent stoppages by the referee for minor infringements spoilt the flow of the game for the remainder of the half, though Paul Farley had a chance to give Bridlington the lead just before half time but pulled his shot wide of the goal. HT 1 – 1
As the referee continued to stop the game for infringements many players seemed confused as to what they could and couldn’t tackle and several bookings for both sides followed, with one resulting in a penalty for Bridlington on the hour when Lee Harper appeared to have been fouled as went up at the back post from a corner. Martin Thacker stroked the ball home to give the visitors the lead. Possession had been fairly equal but on 71 minutes Jamie Cass was judged to have pulled back Whittaker and was sent off for a second bookable offence. That swung the odds in favour of the home side who then upped the pressure. Whittaker saw a shot go just over the bar and Chris White found space to shoot but hit one of his own forwards. With just seven minutes remaining Leek pressured down the right. The ball was crossed in and Kelly saved at point blank range but as the ball was lifted forward again David Whittaker, who looked to be in an offside position, headed home to level matters. Then as Leek piled on the pressure McPherson looked to make space on the edge of the Bridlington area and appeared to fall over the ball but the referee awarded a free kick on the edge of the area. Wayne Thornhill scored direct from the kick to give the home side the points.
