Unibond League Division One
Saturday 19th November 2005

Queensgate, Bridlington
Bridlington Town 2 Mossley 1

Sweet revenge for Town, whose 6-1 thrashing in Manchester earlier in the
season proved the catalyst for the recent run of results which has seen them
storm to the top of the table. Mossley again looked a very capable side,
and one which will continue to push Town all the way for a place in the
Unibond Premier Division.

Town midfielder Martin Thacker gave the visitors notice of Town’s intentions
after only 4 minutes, skimming the bar with a rising 25-yarder. Matt Fyvie,
replacing the injured Ali Benson in attack, then linked well with fellow
frontman Paul Palmer and the visitors’ centre-back Dan Meadowcroft did well
to shepherd the ball away fron danger.

With the game developing into a cat-and-mouse affair in midfield, it needed
a spark of class to ignite the game, and Mossley provided that in the 28th
minute, taking the lead with a simple yet devastatingly effective move.
Burly striker Leon Mike held up a ball out of defence on the half way line,
turned and lobbed a diagonal ball over the top into the path of Jordan
Goodeve. The pacy frontman, Town’s tormentor-in-chief in the previous
encounter, again rocketed clear of the home defence to crack a shot past
Nick Tudor into the far corner.

Town’s nemesis was denied a second on 36 minutes, as an almost identical
move, this time sparked by Joel Pikington, set the striker free. Nick Tudor
produced a fine save to push the ball away, then went one better to fling
himself at the feet of Adam Morning to deny the winger what seemed a certain
goal from the rebound.

After having what seemed a cast-iron penalty turned down by referee McGrath
just before Tudor’s double save, Town again pressured the Mossley rearguard
on 43 minutes. This time the official had no option but to point to the
spot as Fyvie was sent tumbling by Steve Sheil inside the box. Thacker
strode forward to breathe life into Town’s hopes, but was foiled by a
brilliant save by Lee Bracey, the veteran ‘keeper plunging full length to
block the shot low at the right-hand post.

Half-Time
Bridlington Town 0 Mossley 1

Town came out gunning for the visitors in the second period, and were
unlucky not to equalise with their first attack. Paul Wilson delivered a
fine far-post cross and Shaun Baker saw his looping header cleared off the
line by Nick Thompson. Town continued to push, with Chris Hyam looking a
constant threat to the Mossley defence on the right flank.

However it was left-winger Wilson who at last made the breakthrough on 56
minutes. Hyam was again the architect, linking well with Thacker to whip in
a cross to the far post. Wilson had stolen into the 6-yard box unmarked,
and made no mistake from close range past a helpless Bracey.
More chances followed, as Palmer blasted a shot over the bar on the hour
mark following a scramble inside the Mossley 18-yard box, and then saw his
shot flash just past the post from 12 yards minutes later.

Mossley however showed exactly why they are also at the top end of the
division on 70 minutes, breaking with lightning pace down the left flank.
The ball was fired across the Town box, and Pilkington crashed his header
off the Town bar. Five minutes later after another fine move, Morning took
a through ball in his stride on the angle of the 18-yard box to fire in a
low shot that fizzed inches past Tudor’s left hand post.

The visitors were looking the more likely side to take the three points, and
only another stunning save by Tudor kept his side in the game on 80 minutes.
Again it was the unfortunate Goodeve who was thwarted. He had raced onto
a through ball, and looked a certainty to repeat his first half goal, only
for Tudor to produce a fantastic spreadeagling stop to beat the ball away.

With the clock showing 89 minutes, and Mossley now looking more than happy
to accept the point with their games in hand, Town flung the ball forward
again down the right. This time it was Fyvie who was wide on the edge of
the area. He found a crucial yard of space to fire in a low ball across the
box, towards Wilson, who sent Queensgate into raptures with a cracking shot
across Bracey into the far corner of the net to win the game for Town.

A vital victory for Billy Heath’s side against a team most observers felt
could comfortably hold their own in the next division up. After the
disappointing FA Trophy exit the previous Tuesday, they proved they have
what it takes to mix it with the best sides the division can offer, and
there is now increasing daylight emerging between Town and most of the
chasing pack. They now play Premier Division outfit Lincoln United at
Queensgate on Tuesday in a League Cup fixture, which will be another useful
indicator of how far Heaths’ charges have come since that day in September.
