Bridlington Town 1(0)(Thacker pen 81)
Att: 191
Referee: R.Salt
This was a much improved performance from the Bridlington side but they went down at their Premier Division hosts. A goal in each half from Gildea and Sheeran put the home side ahead and Bridlingtons reply came from Thacker with a penalty with ten minutes remaining.
Bridlington had forced the game from the start, pressuring through Drayton and Harrison and had the majority of the play. The home side were restricted to long balls and looking to hit on the break. Harrison was unlucky to just miss after a great turn and cross from Drayton, and Heath saw his goal bound header from a Farley corner cleared off the line by Swales. Mid way through the first half another Bridligton corner found its way out to Robinson who was unlucky to see his effort come back off the post. The visitors were looking the most likely to break the deadlock, Farley heading wide on 37 mins with only the keeper to beat, but it was the Whitby who took the lead. A break down the right and a cross saw Kelly suprbly tip round for a corner. From the corner Gildea found space in the box to glance a header home to give the home side the lead with five minutes to half time.
Whitby were soon into their stride in the second half with McTiernan and Swales threatening down the flanks and playing some neat football. The second goal came just after the hour mark when a ball down the left channel was crossed in, an initial shot was blocked but Sheeran was on hand to follow up to make it 2 - 0 to the home side. Possession and play was almost a reversal of the first half with Whitby pressuring the most and Ure headed a good chance over. With all subs introduced Bridljngton began to make a few inroads and as the game entered the last ten minutes Baldwin put the ball in from the left. Nicholson was judged to have handled and Thacker tucked away the penalty to pull one back for the visiotrs but it was not enough to change the final result.
