Unibond Division One
Bridlington Town 0 Colwyn Bay 0
One from the memory banks, as the seasiders, with no less than 5 of the old
guard that brought the club into the Unibond League 3 years ago in their
ranks, somehow conjured up a vintage performance only 24 hours after a
energy-sapping trip to Warrington. The ageless Wayne Lewis rolled back the
years in defence, but he was just one of eleven giants in red that left the
die-hard fans thumbing their noses at the doom-mongers and stay-away fans
that have deserted the club in recent weeks when the going has got tough.
Town took the game to the Welsh side from the off, with Ben Eastwood going
close on 13 minutes with a crisp half-volley that skimmed the post. With
the imposing figure of winger Wayne Wallace cutting off any threat from the
visitors at source, Town were able to create plenty more chances as the half
wore on. Young winger Andy Wardell was causing problems for the Colwyn
defence, and from his square ball in the 25th minute to Shaun Baker, Town
were desparately unlucky not to take the lead, as Eastwood was somehow
denied at the far post by a last ditch tackle from John Boardman.
Eastwoods strike partner Ali Benson was left cursing his luck as Bay
centre-back Paul Roberts foiled him inside the six-yard box on 28 minutes,
and then on 40 minutes, again following great work from Eastwood, cracking
a
20-yarder that keeper Ian Havard fingertipped over the bar.
Colwyn opened the second half brightly, and winger Chris Hogg got in behind
the Town defence to fire in a low shot which was deflected behind for a
corner. Towns rhythm was hardly interrupted, as within minutes, a Martin
Thacker free-kick onto the head of Eastwood had been scrambled off the line
by Carl Rodgers. Wardell again displayed sharp pace and awareness on the
right flank to get free and square to Benson, but the Town striker was
pulled back for offside. The winger made way for the stocky figure of Andy
Neill on 68 minutes, and the frontman immediately got among the Bay
defence. Another episode of pinball in the visitors goal saw Roberts
again
save his side as he hacked clear with Havard beaten and Eastwood lurking.
A brief period of Colwyn pressure as the clock wore on saw a dogged
rearguard action as the Town defence somehow defied fatigue to keep the
visitors at arms length. Substitute Luke Campbell had Town hearts racing as
he found space to crack a 20-yard angled drive inches wide of Gavin Kellys
post on 83 minutes, but it was Town who found a second wind at the death to
close out the game for a thoroughly deserved point.
