Unibond League Division One
Tuesday 18th October 2005
Eastwood Town 0 Bridlington Town 3

A sensational performance from Town against a skilful and pacey side that
will surely be in the shake up at the end of the season. The result spoke
volumes for the confidence flowing through Billy Heath’s side at present, as
they defended solidly going against the slope in the first period, and cut
free with some sublime attacking football in the second.

The home side sought early advantage in the gradient, with numerous long
balls over the top testing Lee Harper and Steve Heath. Eastwood had the
first real chance as a lightning break down the left saw Colin Daniel crack
in a shot from the edge of the 18-yard area which flashed across the face of
goal. The first half then developed into an even affair, with Town’s
determination to play the ball through the midfield just falling short at
the final ball. The home side went close through the dangerous Kelvin
Mushambi in the 27th minute, but Brid replied instantly as Matt Fyvie
gathered the clearance to feed Ben Sherwood, who tested ‘keeper Danny Bryant
from 20 yards.

Brid kept up the pressure, and on 36 minutes fine work by Paul Palmer in the
midfield Sherwood free again. He was brought down by Rich Bevan on the
edge of the area, but Martin Thacker’s free-kick was well held by Bryant.

Eastwood gained a foothold on the game as the half drew to a close.
Mushambi again went close with a 20-yarder that skimmed the bar, and the
rugged Pete Knox almost got reward for a hard working performance as he got
free inside the area only to drive a low shot wise of the post.

Half Time Eastwood 0 Bridlington Town 0

Town took frighteningly quick advantage of the slope with a goal in the
opening minute of the second half. Baker had been fould in the midfield,
and from Thacker’s beautifully flighted free kick, Fyvie flicked on for
Palmer to crash home at the far post.

The home side piled forward in response, and only a brilliant last-ditch
interception inside his own six-yard box denied Mushambi an equaliser, as
the home striker closed in on a wicked cross from Paul Gould. Again
Eastwood pressured, and this time they gained reward. Another ball into the
Town box on 61 minutes saw Mick Galloway cut past Steve Heath, and crumple
under the Town man’s challenge. Despite uproar from the Town bench and
supporters the referee pointed to the spot. Mushambi stepped up, and
spoiled an otherwise immaculate performance by blazing the spot kick high
over the bar.
It was hard on the Eastwood man, who looked a class act at this level, and
will surely be a major player as the season progresses.

Town took full advantage of the let-off. A fine move down the left on 67
minutes earned a corner, which was floated in and despatched expertly past
Bryant by Lee Harper for Town’s second to give Billy Heath’s side vital
breathing space.

Belief flooded back into Town. Within minutes, Matt Fyvie had received a
through ball from Thacker to turn on the edge of the box and crash a shot
inches wide. Then a fantastic 40-yard diagonal ball by Hyam split the home
defence and Bryant denied Steve Underwood a certain goal with a brave dive
at the Town midfielder’s feet.

Not to be denied, Town wrapped the game up on 72 minutes with yet again a
goal of the season contender from Palmer. Receiving a ball to feet 30 yards
out from goal, he turned the first marker, went past the second and third at
pace before sending a measured drive into the far corner past Bryant for his
11th goal of the season. A simply majestic strike which had the Town bench,
supporters and even the home fans applauding.

The now customary swap of the front men saw Fyvie replaced by Andy Neill in
the 83rd minute. With Town now perhaps settling for the win, the substitute
had few chances, but again showed intelligent distribution to keep
possession in the dying minutes.
