Unibond League Division One
Warrington Town 3 Bridlington Town 0
The woe continues for the debt-stricken seasiders, who were outplayed by
a
side still anchored in the relegation zone. The home side had the game
wrapped up by the break after 3 clinical finishes, and Town were unable to
find a way back in the second half despite an impressive display from
striker Ali Benson.
Chairman Pete Smurthwaite, along with senior players Wayne Lewis and Shaun
Baker, took charge for their first game following the departure from the
helm of Billy Heath and Mark Carroll the previous week, and saw their side
open brightly, gaining a succession of corners in the early stages. All
the good work was undone however after 8 minutes as a long ball out of
defence released frontman Graeme Mitchell, who sped clear of a static
defence to give Town keeper Gavin Kelly no chance with a low shot. It
became a family affair just 3 minutes later, as Phil Mitchell took a square
ball on the edge of the Town box to jink between defenders and slot past
Kelly.
Town hitman Benson was unlucky not to bring his side back into contention
on
17 minutes as he displayed fine control and vision to turn and crack a
20-yard effort that skimmed the Warrington post. He again went close on 25
minutes with a lob that had home keeper Rich Mottram scurrying back
to
cover. Somehow Town again failed to grab a lifeline as a goalmouth scramble
on the half-hour brought no reward, and the home side capitalised ruthlessly
on 44 minutes with a killer strike. With Town pushing up, Phil Mitchell
found space on the left to thread a fine through ball to Matt Farrell on the
angle of the Town 18-yard box, and the full-back struck an instant shot that
flew past Kelly into the far corner.
Town threw on substitutes Andy Wardell and Andy Neill for the second half,
and both were unfortunate not to get reward for a their efforts, as a fine
move between the Town youngsters almost set up Benson on the hour. The
seasiders striker went close again on 70 minutes, and now back to full
fitness after long injury lay-off, proved a real handful to the home
defence all afternoon.
Town were unable to trouble the home defence in the closing stages, with
the
home side playing out time for a deserved victory. After recent long away
trips, Smurthwaites charges now have the luxury of 2 successive home
games
at Queensgate, entertaining Colwyn Bay and Kidsgrove.
