Bridlington Town 1 Bishop Auckland 0
A game that had potential for a typically drab end-of season affair had life
breathed into it by Towns late substitutions, which saw then eventually
wrest the intiative from a stubborn Bishops side.
Chances were at a premium throughout the game, as a vicious crosswind and
dry, bobbly pitch made fluent football a hard task. Towns midfield
strongman Wayne Wallace tried to spark his side, setting up Ali Benson on
10
minutes only for Bishops centre back Paul Griffith to intervene with a
robust challenge. Another Town attack on the half-hour saw Wallace set up
Shaun Baker, who drove a fizzing 25-yarder inches wide. Town wideman
Anthony Bowsley provided a peach of a through ball for Wallace as half-tine
approached, and Bishops keeper Tony Davidson was relieved to see Wallaces
first time shot fly narrowly over the bar.
The half-time break seemed to fire the visitors, as within minutes of the
restart, Town keeper Gavin Kelly had been forced into a brilliant
full-length diving save from a 25-yard Rich Starr drive. Town were
struggling to impose their authority against a side who had already been
relegated form the division earlier in the week, and only another fine
point-blank Kelly on the hour kept the scores level.
Town boss Pete Smurthwaite brought on substitute Dean Douthwaite with a
quarter of hour to go, and was amply rewarded shortly afterwards. Town
winger Danny Buttle, who had seen precious little of the ball in the second
half up until this moment, ran onto a fine Shaun Baker pass, and took the
Bishops right back to the cleaners before delivering a pinpoint far
post
cross. Douthwaite showed perfect awareness to nod the ball down to the
advancing Wallace, who crashed an unstoppable shot past Davidson for Towns
winner.
Benson was put through minutes later by Bowsley, but was foiled by a last
gasp interception as he looked odds-on to score. Town played out added
time comfortably to record a fine win in front of a welcome 200-plus Bank
Holiday crowd.
