Bridlington
Town earned a vital point and put a dent in title chasing Matlock’s hopes.
An early effort from Steve Underwood in the first minute brought a save from Taylor in the Matlock goal. Next an Andy Thompson cross saw Paul Palmer head wide. Bridlington kept the pressure on and worked a series of throw ins down the left before winning a corner, though Matlock cleared. Just after ten minutes a half way line free kick saw Matlock offside. Matlock pressed again but were halted by an infringement returning possession to the home side. Frequent stoppages spoilt the flow of the game. On the quarter hour another corner for Bridlington saw Lee Harper’s header cleared off the line. Bridlington broke again, Paul Palmer tried a shot then Steve Underwood saw Taylor save his effort. A brief foray forwards by Matlock ended with a miscontrol by Holland, then Steve Taylor was caught offside. On 28 minutes a neat move from Bridlington saw Andy Taylor run on and shoot but Matlock keeper Matt Taylor saved. A free kick for Bridlington on the left corner of the penalty area was lifted in by Thacker but Palmer headed over the bar on the half hour. A foul on Andy Taylor gave Bridlington another free kick 35 yards out. This time Palmer got his header on target but Matt Taylor spectacularly tipped over for a corner. From this Lee Harper headed in and once more Taylor tipped over. A long Matlock ball saw Phil Brown get into space but Harper blocked his advance. A through ball for Matlock found Phil Brown, he laid the ball for Sisson who blazed well wide of the mark. A number of throw ins down the Matlock right didn’t bring the visitors any joy and Bridlington attacked. Jamie Richards almost got through but it took two Matlock defenders to defend and clear. With four minutes of first half stoppage time things remained tight and neither team could break the deadlock. HT 0 – 0
On 48 minutes a free kick for Bridlinigton saw Harper get a glancing header that was deflected for a corner. The ball was cleared but Bridlington saw Andy Taylor lift the ball back in and Craig Suddaby rose majestically to head home on 49 mins. Matlock pressed for an equaliser but Heath skilfully blocked Warne and set Bridlington forward again. Another corner was won by Jamie Richards and from this Lee Harper headed just wide. Bridlington were almost through again but Paul Palmer was just offside. Andy Taylor then found Jamie Richards on the left, he cut in a tried to curl the ball but fired wide. A free kick for Matlock was taken by Clarke but Heath headed clear. Bridlington broke forward and Paul Palmer raced in but his effort hit the far post and rebounded kindly for Matlock. A free kick 35 yards out for Matlock gave them opportunity and Andy Taylor put the ball behind for a corner. Danny Holland headed wide. Bridlington attacked and won a corner after a period of pressure. Matlock cleared but Bridlington were soon back on the attack but the ball through was too long and ran to the keeper. Then Jamie Richards got through and shot on the turn but Matlock keeper Taylor saved again on 65 mins. An upfield kick was knocked back by Matlock and Steve Taylor raced through to fire past Baxter and level the scores against the run of play on 70 mins. Matlock attacked again and gained a free kick on the right. Phil Brown headed over. Bridlington pressed and Thacker saw his effort blocked and Matlock attacked again. Bridlington cleared and attacked through Underwood and Palmer, but their efforts were thwarted. A long ball over the top found Matlock’s Danny Holland but he fired wide on 82 mins. Bridlington looked for another goal and won a corner through Richards efforts. Harper headed goalward and the ball was cleared off the line again with appeals for hand ball waved away. Matlock looked to break but Steve Taylor was caught offside. Paul Palmer got down the right for Bridlington and fed Martin Thacker. He turned and shot but grazed the top of the bar on 86 mins. Matlock broke but were again caught offside and the vociferous protests from the Matlock bench saw the referee flash the yellow card. Another card followed for Matlock after a late challenge. As the game went into stoppage time both sides were looking for a winner. Bridlington worked throws down the left but Matlock broke and gained a deep throw on the left. Bridlington cleared and Thacker was felled on the half way line as he raced forward. The free kick resulted in a throw for Bridlington but Matlock cleared again but then lost the ball out of play in the last action of the game.
