FA Trophy 2nd Qual Rd. Replay Warrington Town 1 Bridlington Town 0

In a horrible case of deja-vu, the seasiders again dominated the game in the
first half, contrived to miss chances that would have clinched the game, and
let Warrington back into the game after the break. However this time the
home side this time took ruthless advantage of Town’s hesitancy to run the
game in the second 45 minutes and Town had scarcely a look-in.

Town fans were buoyed after the long journey with a bright opening. Their
side attacked along both flanks with Paul Wilson and the recalled Chris Hyam
getting in behing the home back four on a greasy surface. Matt Fyvie then
set up Wilson on 22 minutes for the winger to flash a header just wide of
the post. Matt Ramsay then arrowed in a fine cross from the left flank for
Lee Harper to guide another header across the box, but the final touch was
lacking from a Town boot with the goal gaping.

Home striker Graeme Mitchell offered the first threat to Town with a mazy
run towards the edge of the area on 34 minutes, which was well halted by a
fine Carl Giblin tackle. Town should have taken the lead minutes before the
break. Martin Thacker swung in a fine free-kick from the edge of the box,
and an almighty scramble ensued as the home side tried to clear the loose
ball. Paul Palmer had the first attempt which was blocked, and from the
rebound Fyvie somehow blasted the ball against the post with the ‘keeper on
the floor.

Town fans saw their side emerge for the second half with high expectations.
The home side, coupled perhaps with the effects of the long midweek journey
for Town, were a different proposition though, and it was no surprise when
after two efforts from Dave Tickle and Jamie Featherstone, they took the
lead on 55 minutes. Featherstone controlled a through ball on the edge of
area and turned to fire a sharp half-volley into the far corner to give
‘keeper Nick Baxter no chance.

Town were given few opportunities to get back into the game by a fired-up
home side. Andy Neill was brought into the fray with 15 minutes to go, but
the big man was marshalled well by Mike Ellison and Chris Jackson, who also
kept the league’s leading scorer Paul Palmer quiet for the evening.
Warrington had a golden chance to kill the game completely on 83 minutes, as
substitute Mike Heverin found space 20 yards out to fire in a low shot which
Baxter did well to parry, with Harper clearing the looping ball off the
line.
