Referee: A.N.Blair – Wallsend

Bridlington Town overpowered their Lancashire visitors with a comprehensive display. Three goals in five minutes in the first half killed off Salford and Town added another two in the second half for good measure

After an early spell of pressure Town appealed for a penalty when Danny Drayton appeared to have been pulled down but the referee denied the claim. Town continued to press and won a corner on the right. Harper headed wide at the back post. Salford collected in mid field and Graham Vaughan got down the right to cross. The ball came free to Darren Hughes but he fired tamely wide. Town won a free kick on the left and the ball was swung in but Salford keeper Gillies plucked the ball from the head of Drayton. On 16 minutes Palmer collected down the right and turned his defender neatly, Craig Burdick, on for Thompson, crossed. Danny Drayton dummied the ball and Stuart Baldwin saw his first shot blocked but he headed home the rebound to open the scoring. Town kept up the pressure and Palmer won a corner. The ball was swung in  by Paul Farley and Paul Palmer netted from inside the six yard box on 18 minutes to make it 2 – 0. Town continued to attack and neat footwork from Burdick found Palmer who headed home to make it 3 – 0 on 21 mins. Another chance for Palmer came from a corner on 24 mins but he side footed just wide. Salford began to play a little and Vaughan won a corner on the left. Kelly held comfortably to stop any threat. Town went straight up the other end and Palmer won a corner. Salford played some neat football and they were creative with a free kick but couldn’t penetrate the home defence. Stuart Baldwin ran down the left, picked out Drayton with his cross but Drayton headed over. As Town attacked again Drayton was fouled five yards outside the box. Farley’s kick was straight at Gillies. At the other end Salford were awarded a free on the left corner of the home area but Harper headed clear to set Town on the attack again. Salford attacked down the left with Wilcock and Buggie combining to win a corner but the header from the Salford attacker went well over. Buggie then was very tricky, working into the box. Francis Vaughan laid the ball back to Smyth and his shot was blocked on the line. HT 3 – 0

Four minutes into the second half Drayton flicked on for Palmer. His shot was blocked for a corner. From this Drayton saw his header cleared off the line. Burdick needed treatment for a clash of heads but even with Town down to ten men they pressured again with Gillies having to tip over. On the hour Burdick picked up a loose ball and attacked the right flank but gained nothing. Andy Taylor was next to try the right and his cross was fired wide by Drayton. Phil Harrison came on to replace Burdick and took just a minute to make an impact. Dave Ingram fed him the ball and he turned and struck a sweet shot from twenty yards past Gillies to make it 4 – 0 on 64 minutes. Salford pushed forward to win a corner but the home side repelled the threat easily. A weak pass in midfield was intercepted by Salford’s Murphy but he could only hit a tame shot at Kelly. Salford pressed again and won successive corners with the third going behind for a goal kick. On 75 minutes a great ball in from Thacker was met on the volley by Drayton but the shot was inches over the bar. Murphy for Salford worked well down the left though when he laid the ball off Town regained possession. With ten minutes remaining Salford went in search of a consolation with more direct football and again won a succession of corners, Kelly twice punching clear before Smyth blazed over from the edge of the area. Ingram and Baldwin combined for the home side to win a corner on the left.  Baldwin at the back post volleyed over. With five minutes remaining a ball from the right was brought down and controlled by Drayton. He made space to fire in Town’s fifth goal. In the last minute a mis hit back pass was intercepted by Drayton and he forced Gillies to tip the ball for a corner. The kick evaded everyone and went for a throw.
