Prior
to kick off a period of silence was observed in memory of Bill Priestly, a
regular Bridlington Town supporter both home and away, who had died recently.
The club extends its sympathy to Bill’s family.
Bridlington
ended their recent goal drought but despite playing some neat football lady luck
was missing again as first half missed chances cost.
Inside
two minutes Martin Thacker broke through, laid the ball out to Paul Palmer but
his cross was gathered by Workington keeper Thompson. Soon after another Thacker
through ball was just too far in front of Palmer. On 9 minutes a long clearance
by Bridlington keeper Gavin Kelly was chased down by Danny Drayton. He attempted
to lob the Workington keeper but his effort drifted agonisingly over the bar.
Another through ball saw Drayton get to the ball but Neil Thompson charged down
his effort. Craig Burdick looked to fire back the rebound but the shot was just
wide. Workington looked to hit back and a mistake by Suddaby let the visitors
in, a scramble ensued and Robert Ennis hit the post before Burdick got back to
clear for the home side. On 17 mins Goulding broke on the left for Workington.
He crossed and the first effort saw a brilliant point blank save from Gavin
Kelly but Glenn Murray was on hand to net to give the visitors the lead.
Bridlington were soon on the attack again with Drayton crossing but his intended
recipient Andy Thompson slipped. On the next attack Palmer headed the ball wide
to Burdick and he crossed but Workington cleared. As the half hour approached
Drayton and Thacker combined to cross, Burdick headed back and Paul Palmer then
headed just over from 6 yards. A long through ball from Steve Robinson saw Paul
Palmer race through and under pressure fired an exquisite shot past the diving
Thompson to level matters for Bridlington on 32 mins which was fully deserved.
Workington upped their work rate and looked to capitalise on a couple of
Bridlington mistakes but each time the offside flag came to the aid of the home
side. HT 1 - 1
After
an even opening to the half Workington pushed forward. An interception and
rebound saw the ball go to Murray and he deftly flicked the ball over Suddaby
and headed past Kelly to regain the lead on 54 mins. Workington regained the
ball soon after the kick off and a deep ball into the box found Matthew Henney
who headed past Kelly for Workington’s 3rd goal on 56 mins.
Bridlington attacked, Drayton flicked on for Palmer but his first touch put him
wider than he would have liked but he still drew a save out of Thompson. Thacker
laid the ball wide for Thompson, he crossed but the ball was scrambled for a
corner. More pressure from Bridlington saw a Palmer cross put behind for another
corner. Workington managed to scramble the ball away again. On 67 mins a foul on
Palmer gave Bridlington a free kick on the left. A good ball in saw Craig
Suddaby get on the end to pull a goal back for the home side. Workington
attacked and a lapse saw Murray in but Kelly deflected the shot with his feet
and Taylor cleared off the line. Burdick anticipated a through ball and as both
he and a defender slipped, Burdick still managed a shot. Workington launched the
ball up field and Taylor slipped allowing Workington sub Archibald to nip
through and lob Kelly to make it 4 – 2 on 76 mins. With five minutes left the
ball came free to Bridlington’s Wayne Lewis and he thundered a 20 yard volley
against the post. A neat flowing move from Bridlington between Palmer Harrison
and Richards saw Richards shoot just wide with time running out. In Stoppage
time Bridlington had a chance from a free kick just outside the box. Thompson
punched Thacker’s effort clear and the whistle went.
