Bridlington Town 2 Warrington Town 2
A shocker for the home fans, who had seen their side cruise into what
appeared to be an unassailable lead. The visitors simply did not look like
getting anything from the game, and Town switched off in the last 15 minutes
with fatal consequences.
After an uneventful start, Town upped the tempo, and it was no surprise when
they opened the scoring on 8 minutes. One from the archives saw Martin
Thacker float a corner onto the head of Shaun Baker, whose flick on was met
by Lee Harper at the far post, who gave keeper Colin Flood no chance
with a
crashing volley.
The seasiders continued to dominate, and after 20 minutes extended the lead
with a well-worked goal. Thacker was again involved, finding Steve
Underwood who played in Paul Palmer with a fine through ball. Towns
leading striker increased his tally in style with an instant shot that flew
past Flood at the near post.
Palmer had a fantastic chance to increase the lead on 26 minutes, as he was
put clear through from strike partner Ali Benson. He drew the keeper
but
dragged his shot inches wide of the right-hand post.
The second half again saw the home side on the front foot. Steve Underwood
was enjoying a fine game on the right flank, and his square ball on the edge
of the 18-yard box saw Palmer lash a first-time shot that Flood had to fling
himself full-length to turn round the post. Benson was unlucky on 52
minutes, meeting a trademark Thacker inswinging corner to flash a header
just over the bar.
On the hour mark, a free-kick just inside the Warrington half released Paul
Wilson wide on the left. A typical shimmying run by the wide man took him
past 2 tackles, and he cut in to curl an effort wide of Floods right
hand
post.
On 76 minutes, what should have been a wake-up call to the seasiders brought
keeper Nick Baxter into serious action for the first time, as he grabbed
a
fierce shot by Warrington striker Jamie Featherstone at the second attempt.
The visitors broke free again minutes later with Graeme Mitchell sending a
shot from the edge of the 18-yard box inches wide of the post.
Towns supporters fears were realised on 85 minutes, as a slick passing
move
ended with a diagonal ball to find substitute Frank Lacken inside the area,
who made no mistake with a crisp shot into the corner giving Baxter no
chance. Warringtons blood was up, and again they surged forward against
a
Town side now playing catch-up despite still holding the lead. Town now
tried to raise their game for the crucial last minutes, roared on by the
home support, but the hammer blow came in the 89th minute. A loose ball on
the edge of the area was crashed goalward by Mitchell, and appeared to
strike an unidentifiable Town players hand. Despite vehement protests,
the spot-kick was awarded, and Featherstone struck his shot squarely down
the middle to earn a most unlikely result for the visitors.
