Town comfortably took the points against next to bottom Colwyn Bay with two
goals in each half, to keep up the pressure at the top of the table. . The win
means that Town, without another home league fixture until the end of the month,
have been unbeaten at home for two years, a run stretching over thirty five
games and seeing 103 goals.
In
the third minute a foul on Kev Smith 25 yards out gave the home side the first
opportunity but Martin Thacker curled his effort wide. Colwyn pressured down
their left and a cross saw Deiniol Graham head over. Town pressed through the
middle and Paul Palmer found space for a shot that Bay keeper Marston had to tip
over. A quick throw down the left for Town saw Smith get in a cross and Burdick
sent the ball goalward where a Bay defender looked to have handled but Referee
Grunnill waved play on the quarter hour. Smith again worked on the left and
flicked on for Paul Palmer who was fouled for a free kick. Bay managed to clear
before Burdick then attacked down the right for no reward. As town pressed again
Shaun Baker was fouled. Stuart Baldwin lifted the ball in and through the crowd
of defenders the ball went in to give the home side the lead on 21 mins. The
home side continued to attack an Smith got behind the defence to cross but
Colwyn’s defence cleared. On the half hour a long ball saw Deiniol Graham
latch on but he fired well wide under pressure from Heath and Suddaby. A half
way free kick for the visitors was lifted into the box. Antrobus headed down and
Graham tried an overhead kick but miss hit. Bridlington returned play with Andy
Thompson picking out Stuart Baldwin. His header was acrobatically tipped over by
Marston. More attacking from Bridlington saw Baldwin feed Palmer on the left.
Palmer switched play across to Thompson and he lifted the ball in. Smith tried
to overhead kick but was blocked but the ball fell kindly for Craig Burdick who
looped a header over Marston to score Town’s second on 38 mins. Dwyer and
Tranter were sterling in their efforts to push forward for Colwyn but
Bridlington responded through Burdick but twice his crosses were cut out by
McMahon, and Palmer also saw McMahon get back to stop his effort on 43 mins.
Smith and Dews contested keenly on Bridlington’s left with Bridlington gaining
a throw in but Bay cleared and broke forward on the stroke of half time, gaining
a free kick on their left. The ball came across and was headed back in for Carl
Tranter to shoot and pull one back for the visitors, despite the home sides
appeals for offside. .
Early
in the second half Hider got down the right to cross, the ball hit Steve Heath
and went for a corner but Town cleared. A deep ball saw Smith on the chase but
Marston came out to hoof the ball out for a throw. Next Palmer chased a ball
down and was caught by Ben Dews who earned a booking. Thacker swung the ball in
and Kevin smith rose to meet it but headed over. A deep ball in from Town to the
back post saw Marston come out to punch and he collided with Horler who needed
treatment. Bay broke down the left and Graham got into the box but shot into the
side netting. Baker and Smith combined for Town to cross in for Burdick but he
headed over on 56 mins. Town restored their two goal advantage on the hour.
Stuart Baldwin had won a corner. Thacker took the kick and Craig suddaby jumped
to power the ball home. Town gained several more corners over the next ten
minutes but Marston held on. Casual defending allowed Bay to regain possession
and cross from the left saw a free header for Graham but straight at Kelly.
A
ball through from Palmer saw Burdick beat the off side trap and as he tried to
lob the keeper Marston just managed to get a touch. Baldwin then slotted Burdick
through before getting the ball laid back but his shot hit Palmer to go behind.
Bay had pushed men forward to attack but a long ball from Kelly saw Palmer race
through to lob Marston for Town’s 4th goal with five minutes
remaining. Farley came on for
Burdick and had a chance to score but pulled his shot wide with almost his first
touch. Credit to Colwyn Bay for still looking for goals but they couldn’t find
a way through
