Saturday 10th December 2005
Bridlington Town 0 Woodley Sports 2
The side from Manchester with the leagues only artificial pitch showed
that a pudding of a surface at Queensgate suited them equally as well with
a
deserved victory over table-topping Town.
The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges, with Town keeper
Nick
Baxter being called into action in only the 4th minute, blocking a shot from
Chris Curley, and Shaun Baker having to move smartly to deny Sports
striker
Liam Dickinson a run on goal. Town replied with Martin Thacker finding Paul
Wilson in space, whose shot appeared to have been turned behind for a corner
by Woodley keeper Liam Higginbotham only for the referee to give a
goal-kick.
Town had the best chance of the match in the 12th minute. A foul on Matt
Fyvie just outside the box saw Thacker swing in a fine free-kick which only
evaded Paul Palmer and Lee Harper at the far post by inches.
Woodley winger Mario Daniel was emerging as a threat with pace and trickery
down the right flank, and he was the architect of his sides opening
goal in
the 29th minute. Finding space wide, he made ground and delivered a perfect
diagonal ball behind the Town defence for Luke Horrocks to slide home from
close range.
Town gained a corner from the restart as they hit back immediately, but
centre-back Chris Young was first to the ball, and the visitors again turned
defence into attack with lightning speed, finding Horrocks in space inside
the Town half, whose low shot fizzed past Baxters post.

A more positive Town emerged for the second half. Steve Underwood replaced
Chris Hyam on the right to offer a more physical presence on the heavy
surface. The move almost paid dividends on 56 minutes, as Underwoods
ball
into the box found Steve Heath, whose close range effort drew a fantastic
stop from Higginbotham, who could have hardly seen the ball coming through
the legs at his near post until the last second.
Town continued to press, with striker Ali Benson replacing Fyvie on the
hour. The ex-Hull City man earned a free-kick on 70 minutes, and from
Thackers delivery, Harper crashed a header against the bar with
Higginbotham beaten. The Woodley goal led a charmed life in the ensuing
minutes, as Underwood hit the bar with a header, and Palmer rattled the post
from a 20-yard free-kick.
With Town pouring forward in search of the elusive equaliser, the
counter-attack was always a threat, and so it proved on 86 minutes.
Horrocks was played through by Curley, and as he took the ball round Baxter,
appeared to hauled down by the Town keeper on the edge of the box. Despite
vehement protests, the referee gave the spot-kick, and despatched the
unfortunate keeper to the dressing room with a straight red card. Baker
took over the gloves, but was given no chance by Dickinson, who slammed the
spot-kick low into the corner.
This was Towns first home defeat of the season, and with their 2 closest
rivals for top spot both winning, they are now looking anxiously over their
shoulders. Other sides in the top six lost however, and on another day, at
least one of the myriad of chances created in the second half would surely
have gone in. Billy Heaths side travel to Bamber Bridge this Saturday
remaining in good heart, and still able to head the league going into the
festive period.
