Town will be cursing that they didn’t convert possession into goals and then
conceded a late goal to give the visitors a point in an entertaining game at
Queensgate in front of a near 300 crowd.
A free kick, after a foul on Danny Drayton, was lifted in by Martin Thacker. Lee Harper’s glancing header was just wide of the post with less than three minutes on the watch. A mis placed clearance from Stocksbridge found Baldwin on the left and his drive was parried for a corner. From the corner Harper and Palmer both saw headed efforts cleared off the line. More Town pressure down the left saw Baldwin cross and Ingram was caught offside at the far post as he headed on 7 mins. Stocksbridge work up field and put a deep cross into the box but a foul on Keeper Kelly gave possession to the home side. A long ball into the box was spilled by Siddall and though Baldwin tried to benefit the visitors cleared for a corner. Stocksbridge attacked down the left flank with Knox forcing Heath to concede a throw in. Knox and Riley combined but Riley was offside. At the other end a throw in found Palmer who turned neatly to lift the ball in for Baldwin. Baldwin’s attempted overhead kick went over the bar. Further pressure won a corner on 18 mins. A second followed before Stocksbridge cleared their lines. Stocksbridge again made inroads down their left flank but didn’t penetrate. Against the run of play, a long free kick into the home penalty area was met by a melee of players from both sides. Brookes claimed the final touch as the ball nestled in the net with keeper Kelly claiming a foul but the goal stood. 0 – 1 on 26 mins gave the visitors the lead with their second real attempt on goal. Bridlington pressured in search of an equaliser winning more corners but each time Stocksbridge cleared. Baldwin played in Palmer and he fed Ingram who’s powerful shot was blocked by Midleton with the most delicate part of his anatomy, leaving him gasping. As the last five minutes of the half approached Town were awarded a free kick outside the right of the visitors penalty area. Thacker’s effort grazed the top of the bar. Good approach play down the right saw a good cross and another corner conceded by the visitors. They cleared for a throw in and then conceded a free kick from it. Another corner for Town and again a second then a third as Stocksbridge defended desperately, but still no reward for the home side and the half ended with the visitors in front. 0 – 1
The second half began with Town pressuring again, Ingram winning a corner. Paul Farley took the corner, the ball was only half cleared and Ingram rifled the ball into the net from over 20 yards to level the scores with only 40 seconds of the half gone. Town kept up the pressure and again won successive corner with Siddall claiming the second off Drayton’s head. Still Town pressured and Siddall sliced a back pass for a throw. A great surging run from Thompson promised well but Swales then over hit his ball in. Stocksbridge were struggling to leave their half as wave after wave of attacks from Town came at them. On the hour Stocksbridge finally strung together an attack but Riley blazed well wide and over. A foul on Drayton gave Town a free kick 30 yards out, but a loose pass lost possession. Stocksbridge had a spell of pressure with Kelly gathering a Brrokes header. Then a Ricchards ball in found his forwards offside. On 72 mins a well weighted through ball from Baldwin found Palmer. He crossed but Ingram couldn’t get his header on target. Town regained possession and Drayton flicked on for Palmer who beat the keeper to the ball to slot home on 73 mins to give the home side a deserved lead. 2 – 1. Stocksbridge attacked down the left and Thompson was judged to have handled but Town cleared from the free but Stocksbridge hit back to win a corner. Kelly gathered to ease the pressure. A deep ball from Stocksbridge saw Harper judged to have fouled Knox on the edge of the box but Town cleared. Buoyed by their efforts, Stocksbridge became more industrious. But Town hit back with Drayton forcing the visiting defence to concede a deep throw. Stocksbridge regained possession but then the home side pressed again. A long ball down the right for Stocksbridge was crossed in. Peteer Knox turned sweetly on the edge of the box to slot past Kelly on 88 mins to level the scores.
