East Riding Senior Cup Bridlington Town 3 Easington United 1
A plucky and skilful but ultimately fruitless 90 minutes for the visitors,
who had the better of the first 45 minutes, only for the class and fitness
of the home side to become apparent after the break.
Town had a chance after only 2 minutes, with Matt Fyvie showing delightful
control to turn and lay the ball first time to Paul Wilson wide on the left.
His diagonal ball reached Wayne Lewis, who fired a first time shot over
the bar.
Easington pressed on the quarter hour, and Craig Foster found space on the
edge of the Town area to turn and hit a rising drive that also cleared the
bar by inches.
Fyvie again was at the hub of the Town attack minutes later as he tested
keeper Kev Appleyard from distance. Back came the visitors on 23 minutes,
with Gavin Thurkettle playing in Foster behind the Town defence, only for
keeper Nick Tudor to come smartly off his line to gather.
On 32 minutes, the Humber League side took a deserved lead, as a fine move
through the middle saw Ian Barrow play an incisive ball wide to Foster. He
split the Town defence with a fine return back into the box, and Stu
Campbell slid in unchallenged to fire past Tudor from close range.
Town were struggling to get the upper hand against a fired-up opposition
,and even midfield talisman Martin Thacker could only hit a trademark
free-kick straight into the arms of Appleyard on 38 minutes.
Half-Time Brid Town 0 Easington 1
One could only guess at the tone of Billy Heaths half-time team talk
to his
Unibond League side, but it clearly worked. Fyvie and Ali Benson had
already worked a good chance minutes after the restart before Fyvie was
replaced by Paul Palmer on 50 minutes. Towns leading scorer immediately
set about the Easington defence, and it was no surprise when on 57 minutes,
a
sharp passing move that saw Wilson and Chris Hyam ping the ball between the
flanks saw him arrive at the far post with precision timing to slot the ball
home for the equaliser.
The two Town front men were now linking ominously well, and Palmer was
unlucky again on the hour as Benson fed him a cracker of a pass on the edge
of the box. He struck his shot well, only for Appleyard to pull off a fine
diving save.
Thacker settled the nerves of the home crowd with the vital second for Town
on 68 minutes, cracking home a ball from Palmer from the edge of the 18-yard
area. Town put the game to bed on 72 minutes as the lethal Palmer took a
square ball from Hyam to waltz past three defenders and lash the ball past
a
helpless Appleyard for an emphatic third.
Benson was replaced by Andy Neill with 15 minutes to go, and the burly young
frontman again put himself about to good effect. He was unlucky not to get
on the scoresheet, as Palmer again broke free and elected to blast the ball
straight at Appleyard with the unfortunate Neill unmarked inside the 18-yard
box.
A potential banana skin avoided for the Unibond League high-flyers against
the HPL side, who always tried to play constructive football on a heavy
pitch. Other sides may have been content to play a physical long ball game
in the conditions, and Easingtons approach earned them deserved plaudits
from both sets of fans for their efforts.
