Unibond League Division One
Saturday 8th October 2005
Christchurch Meadow, Belper
Bridlington Town 3, Belper Town 2
Match report by Justin Choat.

A gripping encounter at the Meadow. The depleted seasiders had chances to
bury the game inside the first half-hour, Belper then seemed to have put the
result beyond doubt with a goal either side of half-time, until a stirring
revival in the last quarter of an hour saw Brid come away with the three
points.

Town had a glorious chance to take the lead in the opeing minute of the
game. Paul Palmer flicked on a long ball from Steve Heath into the path of
Matt Fyvie, who bore down on goal with defenders in his wake. The shot was
well struck but ‘keeper Andy Carney had spread himself, and the Town striker
saw the ball flash past the base of the post. Brid again went close in the
5th minute. Another teasing through ball by Ben Sherwood was grabbed by
Carney with Palmer stretching to make contact. Any touch would have
diverted the ball in, but the Town frontman was agonisingly inches away.

Continuous rain was making the surface treacherous. Belper began to emerge
from their shell and take advantage of this on the 25-minute mark, as they
created their first real chance. Right-back Ryan Cancellara made ground and
delivered a fine far-post cross that was headed wide by Andy Rushbury with
the goal gaping. Suddenly it was all Belper, and Brid were on the back
foot. Lively winger Sean Gummer threaded a though ball which found Asa
Ingall on the edge of the box. He turned a cracked a first-time low drive
which Nick Tudor did well to turn away for a corner. The Town ‘keeper went
one better in the next attack on 32 minutes as again the dangerous
Cancellara got clear, only for Tudor to deny him with a brilliant one-on-one
block. Jamie Walker had another chance for the home side with a free header
on the six-yard line that he somehow directed over the bar.

Town boss Billy Heath was forced into a reshuffle in the middle of the park
as the pressure continued with wide man Liam Cattermole being sacrificed to
make way for the experienced Wayne Lewis who slotted in to the centre.
Belper however still continued to ask the questions, and Ingall spurned
another golden opportunity on 40 minutes as a corner was hoisted into the
Brid box. He nipped between Steve Heath and Lee Harper only to see his
header go wide of the post.

On 45 minutes, and with the added minutes indicator board being held up,
Brid looked to have survived the onslaught only for one last long ball into
the box to finally undo all the hard work. Tudor saved the initial shot
from Rushbury, but Walker was closing in fast on the loose ball, and Harper,
in attempting to clear, fatally spooned the ball past Tudor into his own
net.

Half Time Belper 1 Bridlington 0

Another strong opening for Brid, who again had a chance to open their
account in the very first minute of the half. Martin Ramsay got in behind
the home defence to lay the ball back for Chris Hyam on the edge of the
18-yard area, who crashed a low shot narrowly wide with Carney beaten. On
49 minutes, Shaun Baker reacted first to a loose ball 25 yards out, and
drove in a tremendous rising shot that skimmed the bar.

Again, with Brid having looked the more likely side to score, Belper dealt a
hammer blow in the 56th minute in their first real attack of the half. From
a corner, the ball was only cleared straight up into the air, and Jamie
Walker was able to rise unchallenged at the far post to nod home.

The game appeared lost, until the introduction of Andy Neill for Matt Fyvie
in the 68th minute. He was among the home defenders straight away, and it
was no surprise that he was involved in Town’s priceless first goal in the
74th minute. He linked with Chris Hyam who sent a cross into the box and
Paul Palmer got the vital touch ahead of Carney to guide the ball into the
far corner. The unfortunate ‘keeper injured himself badly in trying to
claim the ball and was stretchered off. The local St Johns people should be
applauded for their impressively prompt response to the injury as the
stricken player was back in the dressing room receiving full attention in
the space of minutes. Defender Will Davies took over the gloves, but even
Carney himself surely could have done nothing with Town’s equaliser in the
80th minute. Again Neill was at the hub, as he spun off his marker to lay
the ball into the path of Lewis on the left, who unleashed a unstoppable
25-yarder that soared into the top corner. The home side were now on the
ropes. Brid surged forward again with the same combination almost working a
third goal on 84 minutes, Lewis only just failing to connect with a Neill
cross from the left.

The injury to Carney had thrown Brid the chance they need to win the game,
as 4 precious minutes of added time were announce. They needed only one of
those, as with the clock showing 90 minutes, good work by Palmer on the edge
of the box teed up Chris Hyam, who sent a crisp first time shot curling past
Davies and inside the post. Mayhem ensued among the Brid players and also
in the stand where the Town die-hards were clustered.

A fantastic result for Billy Heath’s side, who were again shorn of key men
due to injury and suspension. The players that have stepped in again gave
100%, with Andy Neill a handful for any defence on this showing and Nick
Tudor again looking assured between the sticks. With players set to return
this week, and 2 home games in succession, there now looks to be genuine
hope of the team putting a run together.
