Unibond Division One

Workington                  1(0)(Goulding 49)

Bridlington Town            2(0)(Baldwin 58, Drayton 74)

Att: 288

Referee: B.A Law

Bridlington Town grabbed three points at Workington when perhaps a draw would have been a fairer result. A coach breakdown meant the kick off was delayed until 3.48 and Bridlington only had a five minute warm up.

Workington had to make an early substitution after a late challenge by Robinson on Hewson saw Hewson stretchered off. Robinson was booked when perhaps other referees might have shown the red card. Bridlington went about their task with Palmer and Drayton linking for Palmer to force a save out of Workington keeper Pape. Workington substitute Goulding then began to terrorise the right wing and from his cross Hopper hit a 25 yarder that Kelly had to save. Just after the half hour a through ball found Workington’s Johnston but Thompson got back well to put in a great challenge to retrieve the ball. Goulding was still the terror for Workington, causing numerous problems for the visitors but even nine minutes of stoppage time couldn’t separate the teams. HT 0 – 0

Workington took the lead early in the second half. A ball lobbed over the top was mis judged by the Bridlington defence and Goulding nipped in to score on 50 mins. 1 – 0

The visitors began to pressure and Drayton was twice caught offside before Baldwin collected on the left. He neatly side stepped a Workington defender and curled a delightful shot from the corner of the box into the corner of the net to level the scores on 58 mins. Just three minutes later an Ingram ball over the top found Drayton and he looked to have been fouled in the box but the referee gave a corner. Two further corner didn’t produce reward for Bridlington though Paul Palmer netted with a header that was disallowed for an infringement. Town did grab the lead in the 74th min. A free kick was lifted in but Workington half cleared and as the ball came back in again Danny Drayton found himself unmarked and headed the ball into the corner pat the keeper and a goal line defender to give the visitors the lead. 1 – 2. Workington tried to respond and came close when Dawson got free on the left to shoot but Gavin Kelly saved with his legs. Bridlington held out for what was perhaps a fortunate three points. FT 1 – 2
