TUESDAY 4TH OCTOBER 2005
STOCKSBRIDGE PARK STEELS 1 BRIDLINGTON TOWN 0
A desperately unlucky result for Town, who hit the woodwork twice, and had
to reshuffle the side at half-time to cover the loss of Craig Suddaby to
injury.
Steels enjoyed the more positive start, with Town keeper Nick Tudor
being
alert to claim a corner which Steels left-back Scott Lowe flicked
dangerously towards the far post.
They took the lead on 14 minutes with a fine move. Ryan Toulson arrowed in
an outswinging cross from the the right which Dave Cockerill met with a
thundering header on the six yard line past a helpless Tudor. Andy Ring was
unlucky not to extend the lead on 17 minutes as he latched onto a long ball
only for Steve Heath to deny him with a superb challenge on the edge of the
18-yard box. Suddaby was also a rock at the back in these early exchanges,
not missing a ball either in the air or on the floor.
Town began to find their feet at last, and left-back Martin Ramsay was
instrumental in this as he stopped a couple of promising Steels moves dead
with robust challenges. He instigated a fine move through the centre
involving Chris Hyam and Matt Fyvie which saw home keeper Steve Hodgson
bring off a sharp save from Fyvie. Liam Cattermole was also starting to
make progress ahead of Ramsay on the left wing, and is looking better now
with every game. He beat his man on 25 minutes and sent over a great
delivery which Hyam met with a header which flashed just just over the bar.
A Fyvie header minutes later was well held by Hodgson.
Carl Giblin set up the next Town attack on 33 minutes, winning a header from
a towering Steels clearance to find Paul Palmer, who crashed his drive off
the bar from the angle of the 18-yard box. The home side then produced a
lighning break on the stroke of half time, as Ben Walker fired a 40-yard
cross-field ball to Cockerill, who drove his shot across the face of goal.
HALF TIME
STOCKSBRIDGE 1 BRIDLINGTON 0
· With Suddaby off due a first-half knock, Town had to re-shape the
side,
and began the second half a little less fluently. Steels looked the more
threatening, and Ramsay did brilliantly to nick the ball off Walkers
head
from a cross when any contact by the home striker would surely have brought
the second goal. Walker was again unlucky as he arrived at the far post
fractionally too late to add the finishing touch to a fine cross from Dan
Anson.
Town struggled to find their rhythm until the hour mark, when Carl Giblin
won the ball in defence and found Shaun Baker in the centre. His first time
ball found Palmer, who crashed a header against the bar with Hodgson
nowhere.
Time was drifting away from Town, and boss Billy Heath brought on striker
Andy Neill for the last quarter to boost the attack. He showed well, but the
home defence however remained a solid outfit, and chances were at a
premium. He set up Palmer with a fine lay-off in the 85th minute but the
ball was hacked way to safety before the striker had a chance to steady
himself. Roared on by a vocal travelling support, Town kept up the fight and
can consider themselves unlucky not to have come away with at least a point
.
