FA Trophy Preliminary
Ilkeston Town 1(0)(Nangle 65)
Bridlington Town 2(2)(Smith 18, Palmer 45)
Att :368
Bridlington Town progressed in this competition thanks to two first half goals from Kevin Smith and Paul Palmer, but had to endure lots of pressure from the home side as the game wore on.
After a fairly even opening Bridlington took the lead on 18 minutes. Paul Palmer broke down the left and crossed for Kevin Smith to score with a header. The visitors went close again soon after, a neat back heel from Taylor into the path of Palmer was denied by Ilkeston keeper Andy Love who got out just in time.
Just before the half hour Ilkeston were awarded a free kick but as the ball was lifted in the referee blew for a foul on Bridlington keeper Kelly before the ball trickled into the net so no goal was given. Bridlington attacked and good work from Kevin Smith saw him make spae to shoot. Love spilled the ball but recovered quickly enough to gather as Palmer and Taylor closed in. The half was drawing to a close when Bridlington were awarded a free kick. Thacker floated the ball in and Paul Palmer headed home to give the visitors a two nil lead.
Ilkeston came out battling for the second half and their pressure ended with Bridlington captain Lee Harper twisting a knee in a strong challenge and having to be replaced by Thompson. With the defence now slightly disjointed Ilkeston began to make more inroads and got reward for their pressure on 65 mins. Chris Thompson got down the right and behind the Bridlington defence to cross for Mark Nangle who sidefooted home. This gave the home side hope and they powered forward and kept Bridlington on the back foot, creating several chances but some wayward finishing and good safe hands from Gavin Kelly kept the lead intact to put Bridlington through.
