2005-2006 fixtures

UNIBOND LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 3RD DECEMBER 2005
BRIDLINGTON TOWN 1, SHEPSHED DYNAMO 0

A virtual re-run of the away fixture in which Dynamo laid siege to the Town
goal for long periods, but were again thwarted by a superb goalkeeping
display by Nick Baxter and stout defending by his back four. Town had not
played for 10 days prior to the game, and the break had undoubtedly
interrupted their previous run of fine form. They looked out of sorts
throughout the game and rarely found the rhythm and passing needed to break
down a physical opposition, whose game appeared far more suited to the heavy
conditions.

Town gave the home fans that braved a bitterly cold and damp afternoon the
best possible winter warmer with a goal after only 4 minutes. Martin
Thacker threaded a through ball to Paul Palmer, and Town’s leading scorer
shrugged off his marker to crash a 18-yard shot past ‘keeper Simon Baldwin
for his 17th of the season.

With Town fans now expecting a goal-fest, their side inexplicably took their
foot off the pedal, and Dynamo quickly seized on the opportunity, adapting
quickly to the sodden surface to play a direct game over the top. Jordan
Lambert gave notice soon after the goal of his side’s intentions, bringing
Baxter into action for the first time to produce a fine full length save
from a low 25 yarder. Burly striker Steve Gomm then got free on the edge of
the Town box, and again Baxter was forced to turn the ball away.

Town found their feet again on the half hour, as Thacker set wideman Paul
Wilson away along the left. He evaded 2 challenges to cut into the box, and
striker Matt Fyvie was only inches away from his low cross. Wilson
continued to offer Town’s main attacking threat, linking well with Martin
Ramsay on a number of occasions to test the Dynamo defence. The elements
continued to be the main winner however, and neither side looked like adding
to the scoresheet as the half drew to a close.

Shepshed upped the tempo after the break, reminding Town fans of the
Alamo-type 90 minutes they endured down in Leicestershire. Baxter had been
the man-of the match for Town then, and again left Dynamo players and fans
cursing with a string of quality saves. His defence was breached once by
Graham Purdey on 56 minutes, only for the effort to be ruled out for
offside.

A brief interruption on the one-way traffic on 70 minutes had Town fans
holding their heads in disbelief, as Palmer was sandwiched inside the Dynamo
area. It appeared a cast-iron penalty, but somehow the referee waved
play-on, and Town’s chance had gone. Town boss Billy Heath made changes to
give fresh impetus to his tiring side. Steve Underwood replaced Chris Hyam,
and then with 10 minutes to go, Ali Benson came off the bench for Fyvie.
Underwood was unlucky as his first involvement saw him surge past 3
defenders on a powerful run towards the box, but his final ball in was
hustled away by the Shepshed defence.

With Baxter again defying Lambert and Gomm in the closing stages, Town held
on to claim a crucial win on a day when again, some of the chasing pack
dropped points. With new frontman Ben Eastwood available for the next game
at home to Woodley Sports this Saturday, Heath has yet more options, and
will be confident of a more positive display from his team
