With
just two minutes gone Town earned a corner. Craig Suddaby headed goalward from
near the back post but his effort was headed off the line by a Witton defender.
Three minutes later Phil Harrison ran at the retreating Witton defence, slotted
an inch perfect ball to Jamie Richards who slammed the ball into the roof of the
net to open the scoring. A foul on Harrison inside the centre circle gave Town
chance to lift the ball into the danger area, but Witton keeper Gibson
collected. Bridlington kept the pressure up but couldn’t add to their tally in
the first quarter hour. Following a ricochet Witton had the chance to attack but
the flag for offside halted their progress. Witton’s next attack saw Chris
hill save from Alex Kevan for a corner. A foul in the box returned possession to
Bridlington. A long ball from Witton found Mike Moseley, he tore past Lee Harper
and beat the diving Hill and found the net from distance to level matters on 22
mins. Craig Burdick got down the right for the home side and put in a great
cross but no-one could get on the end of it. Witton began to get into their game
a little more and pushed forward but an injury to Witton’s Dave Nolan saw a
lengthy stoppage. With five minutes to half time a push on Harrison gave Town a
free kick 30 yards out. Thacker’s effort dipped just over the bar. Some neat
play from Witton gave Burton a chance but he fired wide as half time approached.
Bridlington pressed and Andy Thompson gained a corner. Harper just failed to
connect and Witton cleared. HT 1 - 1
Both
sides were looking to gain an early advantage in the second half. Witton earning
a corner but Bridlington cleared and attacked giving Baker chance to shoot. On
53 minutes a free kick from Thacker was headed against the post by Burdick and
as Harper netted the follow up the offside flag denied the score. Bridlington
worked the ball forward to gain a corner but an infringement returned possession
to Witton on the hour. As Bridlington attacked again Andy Thompson was felled by
Nolan to earn him a caution. The free kick was headed behind for another
Bridlington corner. Gibson gathered and set Witton forward. A foul on Moseley
gave Witton a free kick 35 yards out but they were offside from the kick.
Bridlington attacked down the right and Shaun Baker struck a great shot
from 35 yards forcing Gibson to tip over. A heavy rain shower made the pitch
surface slippery and play became very scrappy. Inside the last ten minutes both
teams were working hard to create openings, but
both sides were lacking a final quality ball in. Witton sub Sargeson went
on a run but the home defence dealt with the threat. Bridlington attacked and
Harrison won a corner though Witton cleared. Two minutes left and Thompson
crossed the ball in for Harrison to head just past the post. More pressure from
the home side in stoppage time forced Barlow to concede a corner. Gibson had to
puch clear and another corner followed though the ball drifted behind off Baker.
A break from Witton saw then get a throw in deep in Bridlington’s half.
Moseley attempted and overhead kick but fired over in the last action of the
game.
