Bridlington Town 3 Brigg Town 1

The early-morning efforts of the Queensgate groundstaff were more than
rewarded as Town romped to a convincing win to see in the New Year in style.
Seasiders’ manager Billy Heath had shuffled the pack in the wake of the
disappointing home defeat the previous week, and a new-look midfield proved
the key with both James Tomlinson and Wayne Wallace dominating the centre of
the park.

Town overcame the early loss of left-back Martin Ramsay to a head injury to
take the game to their rivals from over the Humber. Wallace entered the
fray from the bench with winger Paul Wilson dropping back into defence, and
his physical presence immediately began to cause the visitors problems.

Striker Paul Palmer had already seen the ball in the net on 20 minutes only
to be pulled back for offside, but his side went on to take a deserved lead
on 36 minutes. Right-back Chris Hyams raced onto a diagonal ball from Martin
Thacker near the corner flag to arrow in a brilliant first time cross which
Brigg ‘keeper Damian Steer could only flap out into no-mans land. Town
wideman Steve Underwood was perfectly positioned on the angle of the 6 yard
box to sweep the ball back beyond Steer into the far corner for the opener.
To compound the blow, Brigg skipper Steve Housham had taken a knock in the
scramble and was forced out of the action to be relaced by Sam Thorne.

Brigg responded with centre-back Alex Allen guiding a header from a
free-kick inches over the Town bar as the half drew to a close. This was a
rare moment of trouble for the home side, who saw out the remainder of the
half without further problems.

A lightning strike for Town in the opening stages of the second period put
the game beyond doubt. James Tomlinson won what appeared to be a lost ball
to feed Wallace in the centre of the park after only 48 minutes. The rangy
midfielder strode away from the first challenge, then showed great vision
and skill to set leading scorer Paul Palmer free to crash a superb finish
beyond Steer from the angle of the 18-yard box.

The Lincolnshire outfit again tried to hit back immediately and gained
successive corners, but the home centre-back pairing of Carl Giblin and
Steve Heath dealt confidently with the threat and Town were able to go back
onto the offensive with Wilson spearing in a cross for the left which Steer
held well under pressure.

The seasiders put the game to bed on the hour as a Martin Thacker free-kick
into the Brigg 18-yard box was picked up by Town frontman Ben Eastwood. The
run of the ball had denied the Town striker twice in similar situations
already, but on this occasion, his efforts were rewarded, as he was able to
control, turn, and drive a fine shot low past Steer for his second goal in
three games.

Town comfortably saw off brief Brigg pressure, and Palmer had a chance to
increase the lead following fine work on the left from Wilson. However, out
of the blue, a free-kick for the visitors 30 yards out on 68 minutes saw
Allen steal in ahead of the Town defence to guide home a header and give his
side an unlikely lifeline.

Town striker Ali Benson, on as substitute for Eastwood, wasted no time in
putting the visitors’ defence to the sword. He was denied a deserved goal
on 80 minutes as he turned inside the 18-yard box to fire in a shot that
drew a fantastic diving stop from Steer. In the next Town attack, he took a
ball from Palmer and was again unlucky to see his shot flash inches wide of
the post.

A superb result for Town against a top-half team on a surface clearly more
suited to their robust opponents. Yet again some of their rivals with games
in hand slipped up and the Seasiders may now be counting those vital points
in the bag.
