A scrappy game, which Town, despite not appearing to be at full throttle,
appeared the more positive side throughout the 90 minutes, and deservedly
progress to the next round.
Town enjoyed a more positive time before the break, and carved out several
chances, with the pace and strength of Paul Palmer and Ali Benson proving
a
handful for the visitors defence throughout. James Tomlinson was recalled
to the side after injury, and his appetite for the ball in the midfield also
found Ossett struggling to keep up.
However, it was Martin Thacker who unlocked the West Yorkshire side with
2
trademark goals in the first half. After only 5 minutes, following an
intricate one-touch build up on the right flank, he took a pass from
Tomlinson, and curled a delightful 20 yarder beyond the reach of keeper
Mike Clark into the top corner. He doubled his tally on 40 minutes with a
penalty after Paul Palmer has been brought down in the area by Angus Mackay.
Ossett had in between levelled matters as a fine break out of defence on
17
minutes released David Syers, who beat Town keeper Nick Baxter with
a
cracking low drive from the edge of the 18-yard area.
The second half was a hit-and-miss affair. Town appeared at times content
to sit back and attack the the visitors on the break, and this tactic almost
paid dividends instantly, as great work at pace through the midfield from
Steve Underwood set Benson up for a chance after only 47 minutes, the Town
striker turning his marker inside the box to shoot inches over the bar.
Underwood remained at the hub of Towns movement, and his distribution
again
set up Palmer and Benson for chances as Town flooded forward.
Albion pressured on the hour mark, as they forced a succession of corners.
From the first delivery, Gary Duffy forced a smart save from Baxter, but the
Town defence coped well from then, and took the game back to the visitors.
A through ball by Duffy on 76 minutes put in Jordan Kenothick for a clear
sight of goal, but as the Ossett striker was about to pull the trigger he
was denied by a fantastic sliding interception by Carl Giblin
Palmer made way for Matt Fyvie in the closing minutes, with the youngster
again displaying admirable workrate. He linked well with Benson, and both
players threatened briefly, but a stubborn Ossett rearguard refused to give
way
