FA Trophy Rnd 1

Rossendale                   2(1)(Clarke 17, Morton 64)

Bridlington Town   0(0)()

Rossendale progressed in the Trophy courtesy of a goal in each half. The ever dangerous Doni Clarke knocked in the first and Blake Morton the second. With a couple of key players missing for Bridlington, Rossendale perhaps had the better of the game and deserved their win.

Bridlington had started well enough with Paul Palmer causing problems for the home defence and Danny Drayton looked to have been pulled back when put through but no foul was given. Dave Ingram was industrious and was creating much of the play for Bridlington, constantly supplying Palmer. After a foul on Palmer, Thacker lifted the free kick in and Palmer got a superb glancing header that brought a good save out of Rossendale keeper Mark Andrews. Blake Morton began to enjoy some good runs down the Rossendale left but the home side opened the scoring from a free kick on the right when Doni Clarke got in front of his marker to knock the ball home on 17 minutes. Bridlington responded with pressure, gaining several corners but couldn’t get a telling touch. Town’s best chance of the first half fell to Paul Palmer after Ingram had played him through again. Andrews came out of his goal to challenge and did just enough to force Palmer to fire wide.

Bridlington started well again in the second half, Palmer firing just wide and Drayton unfortunately slipping  when trying to turn and shoot but Rossendale gave the visitors a mountain to climb with a second goal. Defender Chris Perkins got forward to play the ball in for Morton who slipped the ball past Kelly on 64 minutes. Billy Heath began to introduce his substitutes as Bridlington looked to get back into the game but despite lots of pressure the Rossendale defence held out to go into Monday’s draw.
